Gia Lai 116,200 ▲800

Central Highlands coffee prices increased sharply today, bringing the average price in the whole region to about 115,500 - 116,700 VND/kg. Specifically:

Coffee price today in Dak Lak increased by 700 VND/kg to 116,400 VND/kg.

Coffee prices in Gia Lai today increased by 800 VND/kg to 116,200 VND/kg.

Coffee prices in Lam Dong today increased by 900 VND/kg, bringing the price to 115,500 - 116,700 VND/kg.

The world's two top coffee-producing countries are facing contrasting but equally unfavorable weather conditions:

Vietnam (Robusta): Prolonged heavy rains in the Central Highlands are disrupting the harvest. Adverse weather conditions have caused many areas of coffee to ripen early, increasing the risk of mold growth, seriously threatening the quality of the beans. Analysts fear that the actual output in the 2025-2026 crop could be much lower than the USDA's forecast of 31 million bags, although Vicofa had forecast a 10% increase if the weather is favorable.

Brazil (Arabica): Minas Gerais state, a key growing region, recorded an average of just 0.3 mm of rain last week, less than 1% of the multi-year average. The early dry conditions raise serious concerns about the prospects for the 2026-2027 crop and the current crop.

These supply tensions are further reinforced by the sharp decline in international inventories: Arabica is near a 1.5-year low and Robusta has fallen to a more than 3-month low, partly due to the impact of the 50% tariff that the US has imposed on coffee imported from Brazil.

In the context of global supply pressure, Vietnam's coffee area tends to increase. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment recorded that as of September this year, the coffee area reached 764,400 hectares, an increase of 2.3% (16,600 hectares) over the same period last year. Thanks to planting new varieties and focusing on care, productivity has also improved, with Vietnam's output forecast to increase by 120,000 tons in the 2025-2026 crop year.

Notably, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company of Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc (Bau Duc) has just completed planting 2,000 hectares of Arabica coffee and will plant another 1,000 hectares this year. The company plans to expand 3,500 hectares of coffee each year, aiming for a total area of 10,000 hectares in Vietnam and Laos by the end of 2027, with a focus on Arabica (70%) and Robusta (30%). This plan shows the long-term vision of Vietnamese enterprises in improving their position in the global coffee market.

The stability of Robusta prices and the slight increase in domestic prices today indicate that the market is trying to regain balance. However, downward pressure remains, especially on Arabica.

The main reason for the decline in coffee prices (especially Arabica) in recent days is the forecast of rain in Brazil. Although last week was very dry (only 1% of the average rainfall), the forecast of rain this week has eased the drought concerns, pushing prices down. In addition, the hope that the US will soon remove the 50% tariff on Brazilian goods (including coffee) after the meeting between the two Presidents is also a big factor causing investors to sell.

For Robusta, pressure also comes from Vicofa's forecast that Vietnam's coffee output in the 2025/26 crop year could be 10% higher if the weather is favorable.

However, coffee prices are still strongly supported by inventories on international exchanges that are falling to very low levels (Arabica near a 1.5-year low, Robusta at a 3-month low) due to the impact of US-Brazil tariffs. Concerns about La Nina causing a prolonged drought for Brazil's 2026/27 crop are also factors that keep prices from falling too deeply.

The market is likely to continue to fluctuate in a narrow range. Today's slight increase is not enough to confirm the recovery trend. The market is still waiting for clearer news on the US-Brazil trade negotiations and the actual rain developments in Brazil.

The coffee market is in a volatile phase due to the tug of war between fundamental factors. Record low inventories and concerns about La Nina causing prolonged drought in Brazil are strong price support drivers. However, the current slight increase is not enough to confirm a sustainable recovery trend.

The market is still waiting for actual rains in Brazil (although rain forecasts may ease concerns) and for clearer news on the US-Brazil trade talks, which could lead to the US removing the 50% tariff on Brazilian goods. In the short term, experts predict that coffee prices will likely continue to fluctuate in a narrow range, reflecting investor caution in the face of uncertain macro and weather factors.
