Price reduction momentum despite US-Vietnam tariff news
The drop in coffee prices comes amid favorable news for Vietnam. US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that coffee is among the items included in a new trade deal with Vietnam and will be exempt from a 20% import tax. Trump also expressed his desire to “bring the price of coffee down a little bit” and plans to visit Vietnam, a coffee-producing powerhouse.
Coffee prices have fallen largely due to expectations that the US will ease import tariffs on goods from Brazil, including coffee. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he had an "unexpectedly good" meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia and that a "definitive solution" to the trade dispute between the two countries could be reached in the coming days. Experts have linked the improvement in relations to Brazil's role as the world's second-largest producer of rare earth minerals.
However, coffee prices still received some support due to concerns about prolonged dry conditions in Brazil, especially during the crucial flowering period of the coffee trees, which could threaten the 2026-2027 crop. A report from the meteorological agency Somar Meteorologia showed that Minas Gerais state – Brazil’s largest arabica coffee growing region – received just 0.3 mm of rain in the week ending October 24, equivalent to just 1% of the historical average. Coffee regions in Brazil are experiencing a severe drought, with Minas Gerais state recording only about 70% of its average rainfall over the past month.
The sharp decline in global coffee prices today is mainly a reactionary adjustment to positive trade signals between the US and Brazil, a major competitor of Vietnam. Although the US tariff exemption for Vietnamese coffee is a long-term competitive advantage, short-term price reductions still prevail. The market will continue to closely monitor weather developments in Brazil and the US-Brazil trade negotiations in the coming time.
