Speaking with CAND Newspaper reporters on the afternoon of March 25, Mr. Bui Duong Thuat, Director of Mekong Fruit Import-Export Company Limited, said that the price of fresh coconuts has increased in the past few days because the Chinese market has started to increase purchases, thereby affecting the purchase price at the garden.
“When the market increases purchasing, it will push prices up, which will affect input materials and export prices. However, the current market increase is equal to the company's purchasing price at the factory, which is 120,000 VND/dozen, so it has not affected export prices this month,” said Mr. Thuat, adding that businesses are most concerned about a sudden increase in prices at that time, as they will not be able to control prices, because selling is selling at future prices, buying at high prices will make it very difficult to negotiate price increases with buyers.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Vice President of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VinaFruit), General Director of Vina T&T Company said that the price of fresh coconut is increasing every day from 5,000-10,000 VND/dozen, in some areas the price has increased to 150,000 VND/dozen depending on the type. "The price depends on the market, weather and salinity, along with the Chinese market attracting goods, which also pushes up the price. The increase in coconut prices makes it difficult for factories to purchase enough to meet the signed export volume and the high price reduces profits, even causing losses, but farmers benefit," said Mr. Tung. According to Mr. Tung, currently every 2 days Vina T&T exports 3 containers of coconut to markets, of which the most is the US market.

Regarding the reason for the high price of coconut in the past few days, Mr. Cao Ba Dang Khoa - Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Coconut Association said that the raw coconut industry currently has two types: fresh coconut (whole water coconut) and dried coconut (raw coconut). The price of fresh coconut purchased at the garden has increased sharply in the past few days because we have opened the export market to China and the US. When the US market opens, the EU countries also open, many retailers are increasing their search for Vietnamese coconuts. As for dried coconut, raw coconut used for deep processing. Mr. Khoa said that the high price increase is due to many factors, but this year the price has increased sharply because many Chinese investors, instead of buying raw materials, have returned to invest in deep processing in Vietnam, they process coconut milk, frozen coconut water, ... and many other semi-raw products, from which they export to the Chinese market. Currently, Vietnam has about 16 foreign factories and 35 Vietnamese factories that deeply process raw coconut products. In addition, Indonesia - the world's largest coconut producer - has recently started imposing taxes on exported raw coconuts. Therefore, markets such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China and most of all Thailand buy a lot of Vietnamese raw coconuts.
According to Mr. Khoa, another reason for the increase in coconut prices is that Thailand has shifted its crop structure. Instead of growing raw coconuts, which takes 4 years, Thailand has shifted to growing fresh coconuts, which takes only about 2.5 years. Therefore, due to the scarcity of raw coconuts, Thailand has increased the import of raw coconuts from Vietnam through unofficial channels. According to businesses, this makes it difficult for domestic factories to purchase and the price of raw coconuts increases. When coconut prices increase, deep processing factories face difficulties, but on the contrary, farmers benefit.
Faced with the increase in coconut prices and fear of gardeners “breaking the deal”, Mr. Bui Duong Thuat said that the linkage between the growing areas and the enterprise is carried out very closely, many gardeners want to participate in the production chain to have a stable output, so the rate of gardeners breaking the linkage is only about 0.5% in the company, but when this gardener comes out, there are many gardeners lining up to cooperate. At this time, if the market price increases too sharply, the enterprise will also consider increasing the purchase price for associated gardeners at a suitable price.
Mr. Cao Ba Dang Khoa also said that with large coconut export orders, businesses are also very concerned because the purchase price of fresh coconut is unstable. The purchase price of raw materials is too high, which will push up the selling price, but partners will also consider signing orders. Therefore, to have stable and sustainable exports, first of all, there must be a stable raw material area, ensuring quality and close cooperation between businesses and gardeners.
