Global food commodity prices fell in September

Global food commodity prices fell in September as lower sugar and dairy prices offset new peaks in meat prices, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

The FAO food price index, which tracks a basket of internationally traded food commodities, averaged 128.8 points in September, down from a revised level in August. The index was held back last month by a 4.1% drop in the FAO sugar price index, to its lowest level since March 2021.

Sugar prices fell, reflecting improved supply prospects, with higher-than-expected output in Brazil and favorable harvest prospects in India and Thailand, the FAO said. Meanwhile, wheat prices fell for the third consecutive month due to large harvests and weak international demand.

The dairy price index also fell 2.6 percent from the previous month, as butter prices fell sharply on the back of improved production prospects in Oceania. The FAO benchmark cereal index also fell 0.6 percent from August. In contrast, the FAO meat price index rose 0.7 percent to a new record high, driven by higher beef and lamb prices.
