Utilizing livestock wastewater as Struvite fertilizer
According to Vietnam Livestock Magazine , pig farming wastewater is a serious source of environmental pollution, especially for surface water sources. However, in the context of a circular economy, this type of waste contains valuable NPK nutrients that can be reused as fertilizer to replace the mineral resources that are gradually depleting.
Currently, the livestock industry is shifting strongly from small-scale farming in residential areas to concentrated farming models. This causes the amount of livestock waste generated daily to increase, becoming the main cause of pollution and frustration in the community.
The most common treatment solution today is biogas technology, with tanks made of bricks, composites or plastic tarpaulins. Many farms also incorporate a manure separation system to recover solids before treating the wastewater with biogas.
However, biogas technology only processes organic components, creating methane gas (CH₄) for domestic use. Nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium still exist and continue to pollute water and air sources.
On average, each pig produces 20–25 liters of wastewater and 0.5–3 kg of manure per day, depending on age and diet. Wastewater accounts for the majority of the output, including urine, pen water, spilled drinking water, and may contain all or part of the manure.
