According to records in localities, the price of live pigs is "hitting rock bottom", fluctuating from 4.7 - 4.8 million VND/quintal, down about 1.4 million compared to last month.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Binh Ninh commune, Dong Thap province shared that he sold 300 pigs on October 30, 2025, with an average weight of 1.3 quintals/pig, at a price of 4.8 million VND/quintal. At this price, pig farmers lose about 1 million VND per pig, because the time to buy piglets at the beginning of the farming season is quite high.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, the reason for the sharp drop in pork prices is due to the impact of floods and disease outbreaks in many localities, so the demand for fresh food is slow. In addition, traders are currently buying pigs from farmers at a moderate pace, making consumption difficult for farmers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Gai, Binh Ninh commune, Dong Thap province said that about 10 days ago, she sold 5 pigs with a total weight of nearly 700 kg, for 6.2 million VND/100 kg. However, currently, the price of pigs has dropped to only 4.8 million VND/100 kg, a decrease of 1.4 million VND/100 kg. In addition, the cost of animal feed is still high, causing many small-scale farmers to suffer losses or have to temporarily stop re-herding.

Mr. Tran Hoang Nhat Nam, Party Secretary and Chairman of Binh Ninh Commune People's Committee, said that the commune currently has a herd of about 24,000 pigs, mainly raised on large-scale farms. To proactively prevent and control epidemics, using the medicine provided by the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, the locality has deployed disinfection and sterilization of barns in the area. In addition, Binh Ninh Commune also recommends and encourages pig farmers to proactively vaccinate their livestock to protect their livestock.

Currently, many pig farmers in Dong Thap are continuing to re-herd after selling pigs this time, in preparation for the year-end market with the expectation that pig prices will recover compared to the current time.

The agricultural sector of Dong Thap province is advising people to closely monitor market developments, while increasing the application of biosafety farming models, reducing input costs and improving meat quality to meet market demands.

The province is promoting connections between processing enterprises, supermarkets and concentrated livestock farming areas, aiming to develop a safe pork value chain with traceability, thereby helping farmers increase product value and reduce dependence on traders.

To promote the potential and advantages of the pig farming industry in a sustainable direction, Dong Thap is interested in overcoming the previous situation of small-scale farming households, encouraging farmers to gradually convert to large-scale farms and concentrated farming; investing in applying high technology to improve the efficiency of the livestock industry.

The province aims to develop pig farming according to biosafety and disease safety thresholds, as well as focusing on controlling the source of clean, healthy and good quality piglets, one of the prerequisites in current livestock farming.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the local pig herd is recovering rapidly and developing sustainably. Large-scale livestock farming models are becoming more and more popular, and disease prevention is a priority for the province. Dong Thap province currently has a total pig herd of nearly 436,000, an increase of about 0.5% over the same period last year.

Up to now, Dong Thap has 2,646 farms/114,595 livestock and poultry farms (487 pig farms). In the eastern part of Dong Thap province alone, there are nearly 200 livestock and poultry farms investing in modern barn equipment, applying high technology in the production process, helping to improve livestock farming efficiency.

According to livestock farmers, the closed farm model, applying science and technology to the livestock farming process, preventing diseases, producing products that are safe for health and the environment is the right direction, bringing about effective livestock farming and income for households today.
