Durian price today 125 New regulations for imported durian

The durian market today (May 12) in the Mekong Delta, Southeast and Central Highlands regions maintained a stable trend, with prices ranging from 30,000 - 130,000 VND/kg. The price differentiation between types and regions reflects product quality and diverse consumption needs.

Durian prices in the Mekong Delta range from VND30,000 to VND130,000 per kilogram. Musang King grade A leads the way at VND125,000 to VND130,000 per kilogram, followed by Black Thorn grade A (VND120,000 to VND125,000 per kilogram) and Thai VIP (VND90,000 per kilogram). The middle-priced group includes Ri6 VIP (VND65,000 per kilogram), Sau Huu grade A (VND70,000 to VND75,000 per kilogram), and Thai A (VND73,000 to VND76,000 per kilogram). The lowest price is Chuong Bo grade B (VND30,000 per kilogram). The price difference reflects high demand for premium varieties such as Musang King.

Prices in the Southeast range from VND33,000 to VND74,000 per kilogram. Thai durian grade A leads the way at VND71,000 to VND74,000 per kilogram, while Ri6 grade A is at VND52,000 to VND54,000 per kilogram. Thai durian grade C (VND33,000 to VND35,000 per kilogram) and Ri6 grade B (VND35,000 to VND38,000 per kilogram) record low prices. The market in this region is stable, consistent with domestic supply.

The Central Highlands has prices ranging from 32,000 - 74,000 VND/kg. Thai grade A leads at 72,000 - 74,000 VND/kg, Ri6 grade A is at 52,000 - 54,000 VND/kg, and Thai grade C is the lowest (32,000 - 35,000 VND/kg). Prices here are competitive with those in the Southeast, reflecting stable supply and balanced consumption demand.

Tupai King durian - a relatively new name on the market - has suddenly become the focus of gourmets. Identified by its greenish-brown skin, oval-shaped fruit with a round bottom and pointed tip, Tupai King has orange-yellow flesh, a bitter-sweet taste, moderate fat and a characteristic, seductive aroma.

“Tupai King durian has actually been grown for about 5-6 years now, but it is only in the last 2 years that it has really become widely known and sought after by durian connoisseurs for its outstanding flavor and smooth texture,” Eric Yeap, owner of a fruit orchard system in Penang, shared in a phone interview with The Vibes.

“The attraction is not only from domestic consumers but also from customers from Singapore and China. Many people proactively call me to ask when Tupai King is available every time durian season starts,” he added.

Yeap currently owns seven durian orchards spanning 53.4 hectares from Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau, with about 200 durian trees - including 20 Tupai King trees.

Despite limited production, the price of Tupai King has skyrocketed to RM130/kg (equivalent to more than USD30/kg), the highest among all durian varieties in Malaysia. In Hong Kong, the price can even be many times higher due to the increasing demand for importing this “orange yellow” fruit.

Compared to the price of popular durian varieties such as Kampung durian (RM8-15/kg) or other high-end varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn (RM15/kg), Tupai King is “dethroning” in terms of expensiveness with a price many times higher. However, this new durian variety is still sought after by connoisseurs thanks to its special flavor.
