Durian price assessment today May 21, 2025
Durian prices are stable today, with Thai durian and premium varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn having the highest prices, especially in the Mekong Delta. Ri6 is still a popular variety with affordable prices, suitable for many buyer segments.
The Mekong Delta has the most varieties and the highest prices, especially for premium varieties. The Southeast and Central Highlands focus on Ri6 and Thai, with similar prices but no premium varieties.
The high prices of Musang King and Black Thorn reflect strong demand from the high-end market, while Ri6 and Thai still dominate the mass market segment. The negotiated C grade is usually for lower quality goods, serving less demanding markets.
The durian market is stable, with no major price fluctuations, but the high prices of VIP and premium varieties show the appeal of Vietnamese durian, especially in the context of strong growth in exports to markets such as China.
Durian price news today 05/21/2025
Vietnam is consolidating its position as one of the leading durian exporters in China – the world’s largest durian consumer market. In 2024, Vietnam accounted for 38% of the durian market share in China, second only to Thailand with 57%, while Malaysia and the Philippines accounted for only a small portion with a total value of more than 38 million USD.
Vietnamese durian has a competitive advantage thanks to its abundant output, year-round harvest, and short transportation time (1.5-2 days compared to 7 days in Thailand), which helps reduce costs and maintain freshness. The average export price of Vietnamese durian to China reached 4,916 USD/ton in the first 2 months of 2024, lower than Thailand (6,133 USD/ton) but higher than the Philippines (3,075 USD/ton), creating a price advantage.
However, China is tightening quality control, especially with substances such as cadmium and yellow O, causing Vietnam's durian exports in the first quarter of 2025 to decrease sharply, reaching only 130 million USD, down 74% compared to the same period in 2024. Unqualified shipments are being returned, forcing farmers to sell domestically at low prices, even only 25,000 - 40,000 VND/kg in the Mekong Delta.
The 2025 China International Import Expo (CIIE), expected to attract more than 800 businesses from 70 countries, is a great opportunity for Vietnamese durian to promote and expand its market share. In 2024, CIIE recorded agricultural product purchase agreements worth 80 billion USD, with durian being one of the bright spots. Vietnam needs to take advantage of its geographical advantages, improve quality according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, and invest in deep processing (such as frozen durian) to reduce dependence on the Chinese market and compete with rivals such as Malaysia and Thailand.
