On Wednesday, China raised tariffs on imports from the United States from 34% to 84% in response to US President Donald Trump raising tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%.

US President Donald Trump responded with even higher tariffs of up to 125%.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) was up 3.06% at 707 yuan ($96.30) a tonne, after falling to its lowest in more than six months on Wednesday.

Benchmark May iron ore (SZZFK5) on the Singapore Exchange rose 1.76 percent to $96.45 a tonne. Prices hit an intraday high of $99.50 earlier in the session.

“The prospect of a prolonged trade war also raises expectations that China will announce more aggressive stimulus measures,” ING analysts said.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang said it was necessary to take more proactive macroeconomic policies and implement them immediately as “external shocks” have put pressure on China’s economic stability.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE were mixed, with metallurgical coal down 0.38% while coking coal (DCJcv1) gained 1.91%.

Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Hot-rolled rebar and coil rose 2.01 percent, while wire rod (SWRcv1) rose 3.49 percent. Stainless steel fell 0.28 percent.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, in a surprise reversal, announced a 90-day pause on higher tariffs on trading partners that do not retaliate, boosting market sentiment and sending metal prices soaring.

However, Chen Kexin, an analyst at consultancy Lange Steel, said China's steel exports this year could fall below 70 million tonnes due to rising trade tensions, noting that exports will not fall in the first half of the year due to previously delivered shipments.

China's steel exports to hit nine-year high of 110.72 million tonnes in 2024.

The stability of domestic steel prices partly reflects the proactiveness of enterprises in the face of fluctuations in the world market. However, according to experts, the current price level is under great pressure from the raw material market and the global trade situation.
