World steel prices last week: Iron ore slightly decreased, rebar weakened, Ukrainian steel exports recovered

Last week, raw material markets in Asia recorded a trend of differentiation between commodities. The September iron ore futures price on the Dalian exchange decreased slightly by 0.75% to 729.5 yuan/ton (about 101.3 USD/ton). Similarly, the benchmark iron ore price in Singapore also decreased slightly to 100.5 USD/ton. However, thanks to positive expectations of progress in US-China trade relations, both markets still ended the week with significant gains.

Meanwhile, the price of rebar for October delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell 14 yuan to close the week at 3,086 yuan a tonne. Market sentiment remained cautious as hot metal output, an indicator of ore demand, fell 0.4% to 2.45 million tonnes a day. However, some mills maintained stable output as profit margins remained attractive enough to sustain production.

In Europe, the Ukrainian steel industry recorded a strong recovery in the export of semi-finished steel products. In April, exports reached 145,830 tons, up 56% compared to March and the highest level since September 2024. Export revenue reached 76.9 million USD, up nearly 69% compared to the previous month, showing positive signs of recovery after a long period of difficulties due to the conflict.

In addition, the latest report from Eurostat shows that the European Union's greenhouse gas emissions increased by 2.2% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2024, mainly due to growth in the energy sector and household consumption. However, some Nordic countries such as Estonia, Finland and Sweden have maintained a downward trend in emissions while promoting green economic growth.

Iron ore prices fall on weak demand

While domestic steel prices remain stable, global iron ore prices are showing signs of cooling due to declining demand. Europe is pushing policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, putting pressure on the metallurgical industry, which in turn affects demand for input materials such as iron ore.

In addition, concerns about growth prospects in China also affected market sentiment, making raw material prices for the steel industry less vibrant in the short term.
