According to Bloomberg, on May 23, US President Donald Trump announced at the White House that the US could impose a 50% tax on imported goods from the European Union (EU), starting June 1. This information put pressure on steel prices when the first trading session of the week opened.

Semi-finished steel products accounted for the majority of imports. Specifically, the EU imported 853.3 thousand tons of semi-finished products, down 2.4% year-on-year. The import value of this product reached 392.09 million euros, down 13% year-on-year. The largest consumers of semi-finished products from Russia were Belgium with 344 thousand tons (down 2% year-on-year), Italy with about 208 thousand tons (up 15%), the Czech Republic with about 145 thousand tons (up 42.9%) and Denmark with 135 thousand tons (down 9.4%).

Pig iron also accounted for a large import volume of 696.99 thousand tons, 3.5 times higher than the same period last year. The revenue of steel and pig iron companies in Russia (from supplying this product to the EU market) recorded 254.45 million euros, 3.2 times higher than the same period. Of which, the largest pig iron importers were Italy with 525 thousand tons (3.8 times higher), Latvia with 87 thousand tons (up 98.7%).

In related statistics, global pig iron production in April 2025 decreased by 2.9% compared to March, recording 117.3 million tons. Compared to the same period in 2024, the statistics increased by 0.2%, according to data from the World Steel Association WorldSteel.

Accumulated in the first 4 months of the year, pig iron output increased by 0.08% over the same period last year, reaching 463.59 million tons. The largest pig iron producing countries during this period included China with nearly 289 million tons (up 0.8% over the same period), India with about 51 million tons (up 7%).
