During the April 30 - May 1 holiday, the domestic pepper market did not record significant price fluctuations. Purchasing power has slowed down, while supply remains limited. Many businesses and pepper growers are tending to hold onto their stocks, waiting for more positive signals after the holiday.
According to Ptexim's report, pepper demand in major markets such as Europe and Asia is showing signs of recovery, notably the US and China. Exports to China in the first quarter of 2025 increased by nearly 88% compared to the same period last year, but are still lower than the level of 2023. This shows that this is a strategic hoarding action, rather than reflecting a real increase in consumer demand.
In the US, a number of long-term orders have been booked for the third and fourth quarters of this year, reflecting confidence in the possibility of continued price increases, as well as concerns about supply shortages in the coming period. However, Vietnamese businesses are still quite cautious, not rushing to commit to long-term contracts because they expect pepper prices to continue to increase in the 2025–2026 period.
Meanwhile, according to the World Bank's Commodity Market Outlook, global commodity prices are forecast to fall by 12% in 2025 and by another 5% in 2026. When adjusted for inflation, this price level is equivalent to the average of the 2015–2019 period, the lowest level in the 2020s, marking the end of a long price increase cycle from the post-COVID-19 period and the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
World Bank Chief Economist Indermit Gill said that commodity prices have been an important driver for developing countries, especially exporters, but that sharp price swings in the current low-price environment are causing serious economic instability.
In addition, the World Bank forecasts that global food prices will fall by 7% this year and by another 1% next year. However, this reduction is not enough to improve food insecurity in vulnerable countries, especially when humanitarian aid is cut and many areas are still engulfed in conflict.
