On April 16, today's pepper price in the domestic market fluctuated between 157,000 - 158,000 VND/kg, 1,000 - 1,500 VND/kg higher than the previous day.
According to the update of the International Pepper Community, Vietnamese pepper is currently at 6,600 USD/ton (black pepper, 500 g/l); 6,800 USD/ton (black pepper, 550 g/l) and 9,600 USD/ton (white pepper) - unchanged compared to the past few days.
Meanwhile, Indonesian black pepper was 7,064 USD/ton (black pepper) and 9,651 USD/ton (white pepper), down 0.24% and 0.25%.
Mr. Pham Quang Chung, Director of Loc Quang Organic Pepper Cooperative (Loc Ninh district, Binh Phuoc province), said that when there was information that the US planned to impose reciprocal taxes, farmers were very worried about consumption as the US is the largest importer of pepper from Vietnam.
However, when considering carefully, there is no need to worry too much because the US cannot grow pepper and has to depend on imports. However, the tariff storm still has a negative impact on the pepper market, typically the price is still lower than the peak of the year by nearly 10,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Chung explained that the actual price is only the floor price, when selling, farmers will receive a high price, sometimes up to 18,000 VND/kg more thanks to the high quality. For organic pepper production cooperatives, the price is also increased by 25-30%.
The director of Loc Quang Organic Pepper Cooperative informed that this year's pepper crop, the cooperative only harvested 60 tons, while the previous crop was 75 tons. The reason is that the hot weather caused the pepper crop to fail. In addition, many farmers switched from pepper to other crops, especially durian, so the total output in the region decreased sharply.
Therefore, Mr. Chung believes that this year, pepper prices will be in an upward cycle, and are likely to reach 200,000 VND/kg. He has been growing pepper for more than 20 years and he used to sell pepper for 220,000 VND/kg during its golden period (2015-2016).
Deep processing, bringing the price up to 400,000 VND/kg
"In addition to selling raw pepper, we also process finished products and can sell them for 350,000 - 400,000 VND/kg, including tax, shipping and packaging costs," said Mr. Chung.
