The recent rally in gold prices was driven by a weakening US dollar, which hit a six-week low. The US dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, fell to 98.71, its lowest level since late April, when it hit a three-year low.

Meanwhile, investor interest in safe-haven assets such as gold has increased as global trade tensions have shown signs of resurgence. Relations between the US and China have become increasingly tense, with both countries recently accusing each other of failing to comply with a settlement agreement reached in Geneva. The war of words began last weekend when the US made a statement, and China responded by accusing the other on Monday, suggesting that trade talks between the world’s two largest economies may be reaching a dead end.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged when a senior White House official told CNBC that President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping could hold talks this week, opening up the possibility of a de-escalation of tensions. Meanwhile, the conflict between the US and the European Union (EU) has also escalated after Mr. Trump announced a doubling of steel tariffs to 50%. The EU has warned that the move could damage bilateral trade talks, increase global economic uncertainty, and push up costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.
