According to the reporter’s records, the majority of young workers who decide to start a business in the city are motivated by the desire to seek better opportunities, earn more degrees and improve their income. The families of many young people also have high expectations that their children will grow up, gain more life experience and have stable jobs with attractive salaries in big cities.
However, reality is not always as easy as expected. Living alone in big cities, without relatives or support relationships is a big obstacle for young people far from home. They have to build everything from scratch, from finding a room to applying for a job, adapting to the new environment as well as learning how to manage expenses.
The cost of living in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has been increasing steadily in recent years, with rent, food, and gasoline prices all at high levels, forcing many young people to calculate even the smallest expenses. According to a survey by the Institute of Workers and Trade Unions, a young worker with an average income of 7-10 million VND/month in Hanoi has to spend 60-70% of his income on basic expenses such as rent, electricity, water, and food. The remaining savings are very small, not even enough to cover unexpected risks such as illness or job loss.
Ms. Dao Thi Thuy, a young worker from Binh Xuyen district, currently living and working in Hanoi, shared: "The biggest problem for me is housing. Since I started university, I have had to move many times because it is difficult to find a place to rent at a reasonable price. The cost of living in the city is also very high, so I have to spend extremely frugally to be able to save some money."
Not only the cost of living, fierce competition in the labor market is also a great pressure for young people. Reality shows that despite efforts to find job opportunities, not everyone can work in the right profession and expertise.
According to young workers from Vinh Phuc who are living and working in Hanoi, the lack of outstanding skills and limited practical experience, along with the lack of a solid network of relationships, has forced many people to accept working in a different field or temporarily taking low-income jobs to sustain their lives.
High work intensity, unstable income and stressful urban environment make young people easily fall into a state of fatigue and confusion about the future. Many cases after a few years of struggling in the city still have not achieved the set goals such as studying for a degree, accumulating experience or financial stability. Not only that, the psychology of comparing with peers who have stable careers or have achieved high income also creates an invisible burden, leading to feelings of inferiority and disappointment in oneself.
Pressure upon pressure, many young people have considered returning to their hometowns or switching to freelance jobs to reduce the financial burden. However, the choice of leaving or staying is not easy when job opportunities in their hometowns are still limited, especially for jobs that require high expertise or a modern working environment.
In fact, in Vinh Phuc, although the industrial park system is strongly developed, job opportunities are still mainly concentrated in the manufacturing and processing industries for unskilled workers. Other fields such as communications, marketing, information technology... which are popular choices for young people today are still very limited. This causes many young people, although wishing to start a business in their hometown, to leave to seek better opportunities in big cities.
A modern working environment with many promotion opportunities is the key to keeping the young generation in their homeland, making their dreams of starting a business come true right in the land of their birth.
