Vietnam Children's Chess Tournament for the 2025-2026 school year aims to attract 1 million "young" players

For the first time, the tournament uses artificial intelligence (AI), with the entire registration, practice, competition and ranking process being conducted online. Contestants are also accompanied by a specialized AI system for chess called ChessGPT.

On the morning of October 31, in Hanoi, the Central Council of the Young Pioneers, the Center for Support and Development of Vietnamese Children, the DUCA Holdings Science and Technology Enterprise coordinated with relevant units to organize the Launching Ceremony of the Vietnam Children's Chess Tournament for the 2025-2026 school year.

Open to primary and secondary school students nationwide, the Competition will take place throughout the school year (from now until June 2026) and is divided into three rounds: school level, provincial/city level and national final.

More specifically, the Tournament has 10 groups, divided into grades 1-9. In particular, the Tournament also has a separate group for players who have achieved national or international achievements.

From the school level round, the Organizing Committee will select 500 excellent candidates to deploy the provincial/city level round. Next, 500 typical players from 34 provinces and cities will compete in the national final round. This final round is expected to take place within the framework of the National Children's Festival in 2026.

Aiming to attract about 1 million students from more than 25,000 primary and secondary schools, the Organizing Committee of the Tournament hopes to build a healthy intellectual playground; focus on developing students' logical thinking, creativity, discipline and courage; discover and nurture young talents, contributing intellectual human resources to the country in the future.

This year, for the first time, the Tournament applied artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation associated with school sports education . The entire registration, practice, competition and ranking process was conducted online on the digital platform giaicovua.thieunhivietnam.vn.

In addition, a specialized AI system for chess called ChessGPT will accompany candidates throughout the training process, supporting them in tactics, analyzing chess games, evaluating abilities and personalizing the learning path of this intellectual sport for each student.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Central Council of Young Pioneers, Director of the Center for Support and Development of Vietnamese Children Le Anh Quan affirmed: Digital transformation is no longer a slogan, but has become a new method to improve the effectiveness of education.

"Artificial intelligence does not replace teachers or team leaders, but is a support tool to help students learn better, more fairly, according to their abilities and pace. With the Vietnam Children's Chess Tournament for the 2025-2026 school year, we choose a big challenge to make a big step forward, towards building a civilized, sustainable and inspiring school chess ecosystem," said comrade Le Anh Quan.

The tournament has 40 official prizes: 10 First prizes (each prize includes a Gold Medal and 15 million VND); 10 Second prizes (Silver Medal and 10 million VND); 10 Third prizes (Bronze Medal and 5 million VND); 10 "Young Chess Talent" prizes (Commemorative medal and 2.5 million VND). In addition, the final round of the tournament also has the content of "Movement Chess", combining tactical thinking and physical exercise, spreading the spirit of "learning while playing - playing while learning" in the modern educational environment.
