Christmas is gradually becoming important as an occasion for each family to reunite, share love and enjoy the joyful atmosphere with friends and relatives.

According to Western traditions, Christmas is an occasion for people to send each other greetings, to gather warmly with family, to share, love, and give. In Vietnam, Christmas is also respected by many people; many young families decorate Christmas so that their children understand the meaning and appreciate family affection.

Hoang Thi Huong (Phu Xuyen district, Hanoi ) and her husband are Catholic, so every time Christmas comes, her family prepares very early. Many years ago, when the children were young, every time Christmas came, her children often helped their father make a Christmas star to hang on the door and helped their mother clean. Huong often told her children: "If the house is clean, Santa Claus will come and give gifts." The children were still young, so they happily cleaned up so that everyone could receive lots of gifts.

Every Christmas, Ms. Huong buys a Christmas tree, then the whole family goes to find things to hang, such as bells, small gift boxes, golden pine cones... the whole family decorates the tree, singing Christmas songs and hymns. Then she gives her children money to buy Christmas cards and write wishes on them to give to friends... Everything is carefully prepared.

This year, when the children have grown up and moved away from home, Ms. Huong still remembers the old Christmas seasons. She expressed: “The year 2024 has passed with many difficulties and losses. I am grateful that the whole family is still healthy and safe. And this Christmas the whole family is together. On Christmas Eve, when the church bells ring, the whole family excitedly goes to church to attend Christmas mass. After the mass, the family gathers around the small table, sending each other the best Christmas wishes.”

Although Mr. Dang Kim Ba's family (Vice President of Hai Phong City Yoga Association, Member of the Law and Competition Committee of the Vietnam Yoga Federation) is not Catholic, they are also very excited every Christmas.

Mr. Ba said that he really likes the famous saying about Christmas: “At Christmas, all roads lead home”. This saying reminds him that every year, no matter how busy he is or where he is, he will come home to celebrate together, spend time together to talk about what happened in the old year and happily look forward to what is coming in the new year.

He shared: “Every year on Christmas, my wife and I decorate the house, put up the Christmas tree, make cakes, cook and prepare a feast for the whole family. Even though I work all year round, every Christmas I just stay home with my wife and children. I feel lucky, grateful, proud and acknowledge this as a family tradition that we have done together.”

Accordingly, every Christmas, Kim Ba and his wife personally decorate the house and put up a Christmas tree to fill the family with the Christmas atmosphere. He said that every year, at the beginning of November, his family starts to plan for a warm and complete Christmas season. Gradually, it has become a tradition without realizing it. Her family's Christmas trees are always full of decorations with the message that the house is always full, prosperous, warm and joyful.

“I always think that I have to spend time with my children, lest one day they grow up and fly away. At that time, I will feel disappointed when my children are no longer in my arms. Christmas is a good opportunity for me to teach my children about family values such as love, affection, sacrifice, and sharing. I try to create activities that the whole family can participate in such as cooking, decorating the house, decorating the Christmas tree, wrapping gifts, and going shopping if the budget allows,” Mr. Ba emotionally expressed.

Many Vietnamese families consider Christmas an important occasion. Because of the special love that Christmas has for families, people have given it the meaning of a sacred season that many people look forward to. This is the time when children, even though they live far away, come home to reunite, and adults, no matter how busy, arrange to spend all their time with their wives, husbands, and children. Children always try to be more obedient, behave better, hoping that a miracle will happen, that Santa Claus will come and bring gifts.
