Parents and teachers should encourage children to develop the habit of reading from an early age. At preschool age, children can see and understand part of the content of a book through illustrations and writing.
When children are not yet literate, parents can read books to them. This helps them to be exposed to new words, expand their vocabulary, develop listening comprehension, concentration and attention.
In addition, reading books also stimulates children's imagination, helping them learn about the world around them. Stories in books will take children to new lands, meet new friends and discover interesting things.
However, not all children know how to read books properly. In order for children to read effectively, parents and teachers need to guide children in appropriate reading skills and methods.
Recently, the Provincial Museum - Library in collaboration with Ngoc Thanh Secondary School (Phuc Yen) organized a Book Festival with the theme "Entering the era of national growth with books".
The program featured Mr. Nguyen Quoc Vuong, a famous speaker in the field of reading promotion in Vietnam. With a natural, engaging and attractive speaking style, speaker Nguyen Quoc Vuong cited interesting stories about famous people, scientists and politicians in the country and around the world to affirm the importance and benefits of reading, thereby inspiring students to read.
By conveying an engaging message, the speaker guides students in effective reading skills, first of all in determining the purpose of reading.
Read books to gain knowledge, entertain or serve the purpose of studying. Clearly defining the purpose of reading helps readers choose the right book to read.
Regarding book selection, the speaker advised students to find books on topics and content that interest them and choose famous authors to read. If you have difficulty in choosing books to read, you can consult your teachers and parents.
Reading needs to be maintained daily, you must set a goal of reading a certain number of pages each day and build it into a habit. To read effectively, you need to read carefully, read over and over again. When reading, you must know how to reflect, ask questions, and relate to real life.
While reading, you can highlight or write down passages, details, or quotes to remember and easily look up and refer to when needed. To practice concentration skills when reading, you need to choose a quiet, comfortable space, limiting noise and electronic devices.
Diep Han Han, class 8A1, Ngoc Thanh Secondary School said: “I really like reading, but I have difficulty maintaining the habit of reading every day. While reading, sometimes I feel sleepy and lethargic, leading to difficulty concentrating and not being able to remember the content of the book.
Through the sharing of speaker Nguyen Quoc Vuong, I have understood more about the importance of reading and basic reading skills. I will apply the methods that the speaker guides to read books more effectively."
As a book lover and frequent reader, Ms. Pham Thi Anh Hong (Vinh Yen) always believes that reading is an indispensable part of each person's development journey. Therefore, she always cares about and encourages her children to read, creating conditions for them to be exposed to books from an early age.
Ms. Hong said: “I have 2 children, 1 in primary school, 1 in kindergarten. Every night before going to bed, I read books to my children. From fairy tales, weather phenomena, knowledge about the growth and development of animals and plants... all stimulate the children's imagination and creativity.
In addition, I encourage my children to read books on their favorite topics. I teach them reading comprehension skills, intelligent reading skills, expressive reading skills, etc. that I have accumulated over many years of reading.
After my child finished reading, I suggested that he share the book's content with his parents and apply the knowledge in the book to his daily life. The book has become a close friend to every member of my family."
Teaching reading skills and methods helps children easily access the knowledge and messages conveyed in books, making reading more interesting and attractive.
In the first "steps" on the journey to conquer the heights of knowledge, parents and teachers should accompany their children by inspiring and practicing reading skills.
