This year's 10th grade entrance exam is the first year students take the exam according to the new generaleducation program. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has made adjustments to the Literature exam.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Anh, Master of Literature, believes that to accelerate at this stage, students need to pay attention to the following contents:

Firstly, you need to grasp the new structure of the 120-minute exam to pay attention to the key knowledge and skills.

The exam is structured as follows:

Reading Ability

Part I. Reading comprehension (4.0 points)

- Literary text:

+ Story

+ Poetry

+ Drama, memoir

- Argumentative text

- Informational text

Note: Focus is on Modern Poetry and Fiction.

5 questions by level:

- 2 recognition sentences

- 2 sentences of understanding

- 1 application sentence

(including 1 Vietnamese sentence which is usually understandable)

Writing Ability

Part II. Writing (6.0 points)

- Literary essay

- Social commentary

2 sentences

- Write a literary essay: 200 words

- Write a social essay: 400 words

In previous years, the writing requirement was limited to sentences, but this year, it is limited to words.

Therefore, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Anh notes to candidates:

The question states the limit for writing a paragraph of “about 200 words” and an essay of “about 400 words”, meaning that you can write above or below the specified number of words. However, you should not write below the required limit because it will make your writing feel sketchy. If you exceed the limit, you should not write too long because you will lose points. In addition, being too absorbed in one sentence can affect the other sentences due to lack of time.

As a rule of thumb, if you are over the limit, the paragraph should be about one page and the essay about 1.5 pages of exam paper.

In addition, Ms. Thuy Anh noted that students need to be very careful when writing a literary essay to avoid rambling beyond the allowed length while the main idea of the essay has not yet been mentioned.

From now until before the exam, you can buy test paper and do a test on paper to estimate the capacity and layout of the sections, and then make appropriate adjustments.

The language used in the exam will be completely new, not included in any textbook.

Therefore, to do well on the test, students need to:

Grasp the scope of knowledge and types of questions that often appear in exams.

Formulate the types of questions: Divide the questions into types of questions, what types of questions each part has, and memorize the formula for each type. Specifically:

With Reading Comprehension

There are 5 small questions, including 1 question worth 0.5 points and 3 questions worth 1.0 points. The knowledge you need to master for this part is poetic form, narrative voice, rhetorical devices, etc. (take 30 minutes)

For the recognition questions (poetry, narrative point of view...) answer directly with 1 sentence.

For understanding questions, you need to answer very briefly with bullet points for each idea.

Questions that state the artistic effect of rhetorical devices, the meaning of words and images; questions that explain How? What is it? Why?... must indicate the effect of form (helping to express vividly, suggestively, evocatively, contributing to creating rhythm, ...) and content (emphasizing... describing... what? revealing what feelings/emotions?), then expanding to the main idea of the work.

If the question asks about the topic of the text, write briefly in 1-2 sentences. If it asks about the content of the text, write longer.

For questions related to life, students can easily lose points because they answer in a roundabout way and forget the main requirements of the question. Therefore, students need to read the question carefully and underline the key words. For example, "What should students do to show their love for the country?" the key word will be "what should be done", which means pointing out specific actions and deeds.

With Writing

To save time, students should underline keywords and important points in the text, in the questions, and outline the main ideas of the paragraph or essay right on the test paper.

Students should formulate the opening/introduction sentences, closing/conclusion sentences for each type, transition sentences and memorize them so that they don't waste time on this part during the test.

For the literary essay (take 30 minutes):

The main idea is usually stated in the question, students state this main idea in the opening sentence.

Introduction: introduce the author's name, work, and main idea that the topic requires analysis.

Body paragraph: only aims to clarify the idea stated in the introduction, not to expand on other ideas (always incorporate 1 or 2 typical arts and record evidence).

In conclusion, students need to generalize the art (language form, flexible use of rhetorical devices, with poetry being the poetic form, poetic voice, poetic language, etc.; with stories being the story situation, the art of character building, unique storytelling, etc.),

Overview of the content, message, and affirmation of the vitality of the work.

For the social essay (60 minutes) , students need to master the types of essays, write concisely, with one idea per paragraph.

Remember some quotes and examples that can serve as examples for many topics.

When writing a exemplary example, just state who?, where?, summarize the typical work, and add 1 sentence of personal comment.

Note the new type of exercise: propose solutions

"Another thing is that when writing, you need to pay attention to writing complete sentences with subject and predicate even when using bullet points; not making spelling or expression mistakes; presenting neatly and in straight lines; writing clearly and easily readable" - Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Anh added.
