Swiss bosses seek to convince US on tariffs
Swiss business leaders met with US President Donald Trump to draw his attention to the damage that high tariffs are causing their companies, the Swiss government said on November 5.
Trump shocked Switzerland in August by announcing a 39% tariff on goods imported from the country, one of the highest in his global tax campaign. Since then, the wealthy Alpine nation has been trying to negotiate a better tariff deal, even as it cut its 2026 growth forecast as tariffs weigh on its export economy .
Most recently, President Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he had just met with “Swiss High Representatives” and discussed “many topics, including, and most importantly, Trade and Trade Imbalances.” He emphasized: “We will be discussing these topics further with Swiss leaders.”
The Swiss government later issued a statement saying that the meeting was organized through a “private initiative”. It said it “was informed that a number of Swiss business leaders had requested and received a meeting with President Donald Trump”. Although Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) had helped prepare the meeting, it was “independent of the Federal Council”.
The Swiss government declined to name the business leaders who attended the meeting, saying it welcomed the initiative but stressed that "in principle, the Federal Council is responsible and in charge of the negotiations with the relevant US authorities."
