Corn is the second largest food crop after rice, providing the main source of raw materials for the livestock and animal feed processing industry. However, corn farmers face many challenges in the cultivation process, including unfavorable weather, soil conditions, and pest and disease pressure. How to increase corn productivity and improve economic efficiency is always the top concern of farmers.
In fact, in addition to technical factors, good varieties are the prerequisite for effective cultivation. The application of new generation corn varieties with higher yields than traditional corn varieties while investment costs do not increase, bringing double benefits, both preserving corn yield and increasing income for farmers.
As a leading company in the seed industry, Syngenta is constantly researching and testing to continue to produce more perfect products, better meeting the expectations of farmers across the country, including the F1 single hybrid genetically modified corn variety NK6101BGT.
This corn variety was researched by Syngenta scientists and brought back for testing in Vietnam since 2017. After thousands of evaluation tests, NK6101BGT with BGT gene transfer technology has proven its superiority and was recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in October 2023.
Before being officially introduced to Vietnamese farmers, NK6101BGT underwent hundreds of large and small trials over 5 years, in many crop seasons and in 5 ecological regions (Northern midlands and mountains, North Central, Central Highlands, Southeast, Mekong Delta) and all achieved positive results.
The growth period of the F1 hybrid corn variety NK6101BGT in the North is 110 - 120 days and in the South is 100 - 110 days, and can be grown in many crops a year. The new BGT gene transfer technology creates a double layer of action, more effectively prevents stem borers, improves productivity, helps reduce the use of pesticides, contributes to reducing production costs and reduces the risk of environmental pollution. This corn variety has a set of green, disease-free leaves; the leaves are tightly covered, less rotten, less weevils, and resistant to germination on the corn; is drought-resistant..., suitable for drying corn on the fields according to the practices of farmers in mountainous provinces.
The outstanding advantages are confirmed by authentic data when the results of recent trials show that the NK6101BGT corn variety gives stable yield, 9 - 17% higher than the base variety, estimated at more than 9 tons/ha.
Mr. Tran Xuan Van, a farmer in village 5, Ea Wer commune, Buon Don district, Dak Lak province, has been growing Syngenta's genetically modified corn variety for many years. "Now the company has a new genetically modified variety, NK6101BGT, which is more resistant to pests, so there is less need to spray pesticides. The roots are strong, the plants are green from root to tip, and they are drought-tolerant. The corn has a beautiful color and high yield, so the selling price is good. I earned more than 8 million VND/ha in profit this crop."
Mr. Tran Thanh Vu, General Director of Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd. shared: “For more than 20 years, corn growers across the country have been very familiar with our hybrid and transgenic corn varieties. Syngenta’s launch of the NK6101BGT variety with long-term, sustainable insect resistance will help farmers have more superior and reliable options.”
In the coming time, Syngenta Vietnam will continue to organize many technical training activities, field visits, and field workshops to help farmers grow NK6101BGT corn properly, reduce costs of pest control, reduce labor, increase productivity and increase farming efficiency.
