Preserving Gioi Phien vermicelli craft village

Gioi Phien Commune, Yen Bai City is a locality with a tradition of growing and processing vermicelli. Since 2012, the commune has been recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as the first rural craft village in Yen Bai City with the profession of producing vermicelli. Every year, the craft village supplies the market with hundreds of tons of vermicelli, bringing in tens of billions of VND in revenue, creating jobs for people, contributing to the commune having no more poor households, and increasing people's income.

With over 20 years of experience in the profession, Mr. Tran Ngoc Tuan, Ngoi Dong village produces 90 - 100 kg of dried vermicelli per day, supplying consumers. His family's workers work almost without days off.

Mr. Tuan shared: "This job depends on the weather, the most important thing is to have sunshine, the second step is the dough mixing step, we have to make the paste clear and flexible so that when the product comes out, the vermicelli strands will be round and white."

This is the profession that his father left behind. Moreover, the products are all purchased by the Gioi Phien Vermicelli Production and Trading Cooperative at a reasonable price, so the lives of vermicelli makers have also improved. On average, each year, Mr. Tuan's family produces over 8 tons of dried vermicelli, earning over 100 million VND after deducting expenses.

In 2016, Gioi Phien commune had nearly 70 households producing vermicelli, with an output of nearly 500 tons, bringing in nearly 30 billion VND in revenue, contributing to creating jobs on the spot and stable income for hundreds of local workers. However, due to the urbanization process, up to now, Gioi Phien commune has only 26 households producing vermicelli. Many households have boldly invested in large-scale production facilities, using powder grinders and hydraulic presses to press and roll vermicelli into sheets instead of doing it manually, so the current output is over 100 tons, with a selling price ranging from 60 - 70 thousand VND/kg, the total revenue from making vermicelli of the commune reaches over 10 billion VND/year, contributing to the fact that Gioi Phien commune currently has no poor households, with an average income per capita of 56 million VND/year.

Ms. Pham Thi Ha - Director of Gioi Phien Vermicelli Production and Trading Cooperative said: "The cooperative has 10 members, but thanks to modern equipment, the output is stable at 60 tons/year. The cooperative's products are stably supplied to the Big C Supermarket chain, Mimax Nam Dinh supermarket system, distributors in the provinces: Thai Binh, Hung Yen, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Son Tay... To keep its reputation with customers, the cooperative always practices food hygiene and safety and meets the criteria for consumer protection".

Currently, in Gioi Phien commune, there are two establishments producing dong vermicelli, namely Gioi Phien Dao Vermicelli Production and Trading Cooperative and Giap Hau Dong Vermicelli Cooperative. In the past time, implementing the project of linking production according to the value chain, the commune has stepped up urging the two cooperatives to comply with the content of the explanation of the Project on Building, Managing and Developing the Collective Brand "Gioi Phien Dao Vermicelli" for the knife vermicelli product under the intellectual property development support program, the knife vermicelli is recognized as a 4-star OCOP product; promoting the recruitment of members into the cooperative and expanding the production scale. Along with that, the commune also urged the cooperative to actively seek markets, participate in trade promotion, sign additional product consumption contracts to ensure 100% product consumption for establishments participating in the Project...

In the coming time, Gioi Phien will continue to promote trade, develop the digital economy, and maintain the quality of Gioi Phien's 4-star OCOP vermicelli products. "Gio Phien will continue to promote and mobilize enterprises, vermicelli production and trading establishments to promptly adapt to the market mechanism, be dynamic, seek and expand product consumption markets; actively invest in expanding production, innovating technological equipment and machinery, improving labor productivity and product quality. Thereby, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and increasing people's income from vermicelli making" - Mr. Nguyen Huy Quang - Vice Chairman of Gioi Phien Commune People's Committee added.
