Understanding women's suffering
In 2020, Nghia’s family welcomed their first child with overwhelming happiness. But then, he witnessed his wife suffering from persistent back pain - a consequence of giving birth. “That pain not only impaired my wife’s health, but also affected the family’s spirit and quality of life,” Nghia shared.
During those days, Nghia took his wife to many doctors. The doctors all said that after giving birth, his wife's back muscles were weak, and constantly carrying the baby made the condition worse. The solution the doctor gave was that his wife had to use a support belt, an imported type that was sturdy but breathable.
Following the advice, Nghia searched for good quality belts to help his wife reduce her pain. But he was really stunned, because everywhere were imported products with prices beyond the reach of many patients.

According to statistics, up to 50% of women after giving birth experience back pain; with cesarean section, this rate is up to 70%. Some people only have pain for about 1-2 months, but others have pain that lasts for many years.
Faced with the situation that many Vietnamese women face the problem of back pain after giving birth, but not everyone can afford the best solution of using imported belts, Nghia decided that he could not "ignore" it.
Working in the garment industry, he understood quite well about the cost of raw materials and the production process. After researching, he realized that the actual cost of making a belt was not as high as the price of imported products being sold on the market. An idea flashed in his mind, Nghia asked himself: "Why don't I produce high-quality belts myself, at a more reasonable price?"
At that time, Nghia and his wife had the opportunity to take over an orthopedic brace factory left by an acquaintance. He boldly invested and began his journey of producing back braces.
Efforts to find a place for Vietnamese products
When he started to realize his idea, Nghia realized that things were not as easy as he imagined. Although he worked in the garment industry, Nghia was only familiar with business. Now, facing technical issues that required detailed and meticulous knowledge, he was really confused. Having just taken over the factory with a series of operating processes, human resource management, inventory management..., and researching products, Nghia repeatedly fell into a state of overload. For 3 consecutive months, the factory could not produce products, and old staff left one after another...
Luckily, later, a sister who was a technical staff in a medical garment company agreed to join the couple and the product development problem was solved.
By learning from foreign designs and improving some features to suit the Vietnamese body shape, in December 2020, the high-end Son Young belt product was officially launched on the market. In addition to improvements to bring comfort to users, Nghia also adjusted the mesh belt to be thinner and more airy, suitable for the hot and humid weather of our country.
When talking about his products, the thing that the 9X Founder is most proud of is the selling price. Accordingly, the price of Son Young products is only about 250,000 VND/piece, 70 - 80% lower than equivalent imported products.
However, like many founders who are just starting out, Nghia also encountered obstacles in selling. Although the product was good and the business had promoted advertising and reached out to customers, the results were still not as expected.
While “standing in front of the wall without thinking of a way to climb over it”, Nghia proactively took part in sales courses and listened to the advice of his seniors. He realized that he should choose the B2B model (sales to businesses). Instead of retail, he turned to wholesalers in the medical industry, who could not only sell with him but also provide better advice to customers.
Not only targeting women with postpartum back pain, Son Young's belt's customer base has expanded to include customers in many professions such as office workers, drivers, heavy laborers... In addition to helping them get rid of pain, he also spreads the idea of "prevention is better than cure".
When chatting with us, Nghia excitedly said that Son Young had just delivered the 50,000th belt. From agents in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the brand has been present in medical equipment stores across the country. In addition, the Son Young team also coordinated with a number of orthopedic doctors to include the product in the treatment regimen for back pain for patients.
In 2025, the company aims to stabilize the distribution system, striving to bring products to district-level hospitals and above, of which at least 10% of hospitals use Son Young orthopedic braces. With the strength of owning a factory that meets ISO 13485 standards and other standards as prescribed, Son Young is ready to welcome larger orders and is capable of receiving processing orders if customers have a need.
