Google pledges $1 billion to train AI at US universities

(Dan Tri) - Google - a subsidiary of Alphabet - has just announced a $1 billion investment over three years to support artificial intelligence (AI) training at universities across the United States.

To date, more than 100 US universities have signed up to participate in Google's plan, including some of the largest public university systems in the US such as Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina.

The funding will include both cash and resources such as cloud computing credits to serve as part of student training, as well as support for AI-related research at universities.

Notably, the support package also includes the value of paid AI tools that Google is providing on the market. When participating in AI training at universities, Google will provide these tools for free to lecturers and students at schools that cooperate with Google in training.

Google Vice President James Manyika said the company is aiming to expand the program to all accredited non-profit universities in the US. At the same time, Google is also planning to implement a similar plan in a number of other countries.

The announcement comes as Google rivals OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon are also pushing AI-related initiatives in education , as AI increasingly permeates social life. In July, Microsoft also pledged $4 billion to promote AI applications in education globally.

By popularizing AI products to students, technology companies hope to gain an advantage in their corporate business deals in the future, when this group of young users actually enters the labor market.

Many studies have pointed to concerns surrounding AI in education, from facilitating cheating in research and exams to potentially impairing users’ critical thinking skills. Some schools have even banned students from using AI in their essays and research.

However, Mr. Manyika said that since Google began building this education initiative earlier this year, the company has not encountered any opposition from university administrators. Although Mr. Manyika also admitted that there are still “a lot of questions” that need to be clarified around AI.

“We hope to work with universities to learn how best to use AI tools. The insights gained will help shape our decisions in building future products,” Mr. Manyika added.
