Leading training and research facility in Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography

On November 8, the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi held a ceremony to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Faculty of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography and 59 years of training tradition.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Son, Rector of the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, emphasized that after nearly six decades of formation and development, the Faculty of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography has affirmed its position as the leading training and research institution in the country in the fields of meteorology, climate, hydrology, water resources and marine science and technology.

Since the early days of many difficulties, generations of lecturers and students of the Faculty have strived to overcome all challenges, steadfast in the mission of conquering scientific knowledge and serving the country. The Faculty's research projects have contributed to improving the capacity of hydrometeorological forecasting, early warning of natural disasters, assessing the impact of climate change and managing water resources more effectively, issues that are decisive in the sustainable development of Vietnam.

The Rector of the University of Natural Sciences also affirmed: The Faculty of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography demonstrates a pioneering and creative spirit, constantly innovating methods and improving teaching quality and strongly integrating internationally. In particular, the training programs of the Faculty are evaluated and recognized to meet AUN-QA international accreditation standards, affirming the quality on par with Southeast Asia and Asia. The Faculty is also a pioneer in applying modern technology and artificial intelligence in weather and climate forecasting, water resources management and oceanographic research, opening up a new approach in research and training, keeping pace with modern development trends in the world .

Sharing about training and research work, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tien Giang, Head of the Department of Hydrometeorology and Oceanography, said: The Department has trained thousands of bachelors, hundreds of masters and doctors, providing high-quality human resources for state agencies, research institutes and organizations at home and abroad. Generations of students of the Department are always highly appreciated not only for their professional knowledge but also for their sense of responsibility, creativity and excellent working capacity.

Many alumni are currently holding important leadership positions in agencies and organizations, contributing greatly to the sustainable development of the country. The Faculty has also carried out hundreds of research topics/projects at the state, ministerial and local levels focusing on hot issues such as natural disaster forecasting and warning, water resources planning and management, climate change response, and fishing ground forecasting. Thousands of domestic and international scientific articles have been published. The Faculty's research projects not only bring academic contributions but also have high practical significance, helping to reduce natural disaster risks, contributing to sustainable socio-economic development in many localities as well as the country.

On this occasion, the scientific conference on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography: Achievements and challenges in the digital transformation era attracted a large number of scientists. Topics such as: Application of deep learning models in the problem of automatic identification of tropical cyclones in the East Sea; forecasting intra-seasonal droughts using artificial intelligence methods; research on the application of the WRF/WRF-Hydro integrated hydrometeorological model system for flood warning in the Ve and Tra Khuc river basins... attracted the exchange of scientists attending.
