This feature appears below the search bar, next to the "Google Search" button, replacing the "I'm Feeling Lucky" widget.
This feature is not yet widely deployed, new testing is taking place through some of the company's test units.
A Google spokesperson confirmed that the test rollout of the AI search feature to some users began this past week.
Google regularly tests new features through "Labs" (Google's testing unit), and not all experimental products make it to official releases.
The move suggests Google is considering using prime real estate on its website to showcase AI technology, amid growing competition in the AI search space.
Since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, there have been concerns that OpenAI could take away Google's search market share by giving users new ways to find information.
OpenAI has launched “ChatGPT search,” signaling its ambition to compete directly with search engines like Google, Microsoft Bing, and Perplexity.
Microsoft has invested significantly in OpenAI, but OpenAI's products compete with Microsoft's own AI and search products, like Copilot and Bing.
While Google's flagship AI product Gemini is widely considered to perform on par or better than its competitors, Google is still working to expand its user base to compete with ChatGPT's popularity.
According to Google analytics revealed during an antitrust hearing in April, Gemini has 35 million daily active users, compared to ChatGPT's estimated 160 million daily active users.
In March, Google announced it would be testing “AI Mode” for some users, but the description indicated the test would take place on the search results page, not the homepage.
In that announcement, Google described it as an early experiment in Labs to provide “more advanced inference, thinking, and multimodal capabilities.”
Google also recently launched the “AI Futures Fund,” an investment fund that aims to invest in AI startups and give them early access to its AI models.
