Haaland scores twice, Man City wins big against Wolves

(Dan Tri) - Man City had an impressive start to the Premier League season when they defeated Wolves 4-0 at Molineux on the night of August 16, extending their streak of 10 wins in the last 11 matches between the two teams.

Manchester City made a brilliant start to the 2025-26 season as Pep Guardiola's side cruised to a 4-0 win at Wolves, with Erling Haaland and new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki scoring twice. The big win at Molineux saw City move to the top of the table.

Despite a slow start, Erling Haaland's first chance fell to a header that went over the bar in the 19th minute with an open goal in front of him. Wolves then created a notable opportunity when Marshall Munetsi put the ball in the net but was ruled offside in the 24th minute.

However, Man City quickly took a two-goal lead. Haaland opened the scoring with a delicate touch from Rico Lewis' low pass in the 34th minute. Three minutes later, new signing Tijjani Reijnders doubled the lead with a neat finish into the bottom corner after a counter-attack and a pass from Oscar Bobb. This bodes well for the visitors, as AC Milan won 10 of the 13 official matches in which Reijnders scored last season.

In the second half, Wolves tried to find an equaliser with Jorgen Strand Larsen hitting the side netting and James Trafford diving to block, but that was all the home side could do to trouble their opponents. Man City extinguished any hopes of the home side when Haaland completed his double with a close-range tap-in from Reijnders' back pass in the 61st minute.

This was Haaland's 10th goal against Wolves in the Premier League, more than against any other opponent. The 3-goal gap helped Man City play quite comfortably in the remaining minutes when victory was firmly in the hands of Guardiola's students. In the 81st minute, another new player, Rayan Cherki, also got his name on the scoreboard with a beautiful shot into the bottom corner, sealing a 4-0 victory for Man City.

The defeat in the opening game of the season continued Wolves' "August curse", with them winning just one of their 21 Premier League matches this month. Meanwhile, Man City's convincing victory took them to the top of the table right from the first rounds.
