Twin brothers Nguyen Tri Hien and Nguyen Tri Hau (11th grade students majoring in Mathematics, Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province) won gold medals at the 2nd International Mathematics Olympiad, held in Turkmenistan. The good news of the two poor students made the people of Truong Loc village, Tam Thanh commune, Phu Ninh district (Quang Nam) admire the bright example of the two studious students, and admire the poor mother who struggled to raise her children.

"No matter how hard it is, let your child stay in class and school"

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dien, mother of twins Tri Hien - Tri Hau, smiled happily when she saw her children growing up day by day and being very obedient and studious, just like the name that the mother had hoped for when giving birth to her two sons. The certificates of merit and gold medals hanging all over the house are the joy and motivation for the single mother to try her best every day.

She said that at the age of 37, she gave birth to Tri Hien and Tri Hau. At that time, she was teaching at an elementary school in the mountainous district of Nam Giang, nearly a hundred kilometers from home. Every week, she went up and on weekends, she came back to visit her children. She had to rely on her older sister, Nguyen Thi Quoi, to take care of the two children. When the children were nearly 3 years old, she asked to transfer her job to a job closer to home. Thankfully, both boys are well-behaved and eager to learn.

The teacher's salary is still quite difficult to support two children's education, but she said that no matter how hard it is, she tries to give them a proper education. The "two gold nuggets" grow up day by day, both are obedient and studious like a priceless gift from heaven.

Since childhood, both of them were good students, and studied equally in all subjects, however, both of them showed their passion for Math. "The two of them did not study anything extra, they told each other to study, explore, and learn. They both loved to study, their mother always had to remind them to take a break and sit at the desk, they were stuck to their chairs" - she shared. The list of achievements of Tri Hien - Tri Hau makes their peers admire. From grade 1 to grade 11, both children were excellent students and achieved many high results in exams.

Two twin brothers love math

Up to now, Hien and Hau have maintained their achievements of being excellent students for 9 consecutive years with many achievements such as: Gold Medal in the 30-4 Olympic Competition; Gold Medal in the Northern Delta Coastal Olympic Competition; Aluminium Compass Prize at the IGO Competition (Iranian Geometry); Gold Medal in the National Student Math Olympiad Competition; First Prize in the Provincial Excellent Student Competition; Encouragement Prize in the National Excellent Student Competition.

Math-loving twins

Although they are good at all subjects, Hien and Hau clearly show their passion for Mathematics. In 6th grade, they both scored 10 points in the entrance exam for the Math class at Le Quy Don Secondary School and then passed the entrance exam to Nguyen Binh Khiem High School for the Gifted.

Tri Hien and Tri Hau are happy in their mother's arms after returning home with "gold" from the International Mathematics Competition.

Fearing that her children would be under pressure from studying, Ms. Dien only reminded them to take care of their health, have goals to strive for, but not to put too much pressure on themselves. They did not take extra classes, but outside of class time, the two brothers explored and studied together. Both were very interested in new ways to solve math problems.

Quiet but studious are what friends and teachers at school say about the twins Tri Hien and Tri Hau. Teacher Le Dinh Nhat, homeroom teacher of the specialized Math class, said that Hien and Hau are very obedient and try hard in their studies, especially having a passion and creative thinking in Math.

Mr. Le Dinh Nhat (homeroom teacher of the 11th grade Math class) proudly talks about the school's two "golden" students. "Both Tri Hien and Tri Hau are very obedient, hard-working, and make great efforts in their studies. In particular, both of them show very good mathematical abilities. In the learning process, they always find new methods and solutions, so they progress very quickly and continuously achieve high results in their studies.

Talking to Tien Phong reporter right after returning from Turkmenistan, Hien and Hau said they were very happy to have achieved the highest results, and were always grateful to their teachers and family who were always there to encourage and guide them.

Nurturing future talent

Recently, Secretary of Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee Luong Nguyen Minh Triet and Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Le Van Dung met to commend and award 300 million VND to Nguyen Tri Hien and Nguyen Tri Hau for winning Gold Medals at the International Mathematics Olympiad.

Mr. Le Van Dung - Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee, expressed his great joy and pride when two Quang Nam students, Tri Hien and Tri Hau, won high prizes at the international intellectual playground. The two poor but studious students especially impressed the provincial leader. "Tri Hien and Tri Hau winning the Gold Medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad is a great joy worthy of their own continuous efforts. This is a great gift for teachers, families, and also a great joy for the Party Committee and people of the province, contributing to the tradition of studiousness that brings glory to Quang Nam, creating a great motivation to urge the students of the province to continue studying and striving. They are the talents of the country who need to be nurtured and given the conditions to continue achieving achievements and contributing to society" - Mr. Dung emphasized.

Tri Hau shared that the luckiest thing and also the biggest motivation for both brothers is having a gentle and hard-working mother. Another advantage in studying is having a twin brother Tri Hau who also has a passion for Mathematics, accompanying and conquering difficult problems together. "We don't take extra classes, we find ways to relieve stress, don't put too much pressure on ourselves, but when we have the opportunity, we try our best to achieve the best results" - Tri Hau shared.

Mr. Thai Viet Tuong - Director of the Departmentof Education and Training of Quang Nam province said that to achieve this prestigious Gold Medal, Tri Hien and Tri Hau had a long time of training, challenges, and went through many rounds of competition to be selected to participate.

The International Mathematical Olympiad took place from April 21 to 26, attracting 231 students from 15 countries, including Russia, Armenia, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Nepal, China, Belarus, Turkey, Iran, Tajikistan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Qatar and the host country Turkmenistan. This is an international intellectual playground to promote the spirit of learning, cultural exchange and educational cooperation between countries. At the competition, the Vietnamese student team won 6 Gold Medals (leading in the number of gold medals at the tournament), including the two brothers Tri Hien - Tri Hau.
