Weaker performance and heightened risks from supply chain controls are factors that could cause Huawei Mate 70 sales to lag behind its predecessor Mate 60.
According to TechInsights , sales of the Mate 70 smartphone model are expected to reach 3 million units in the fourth quarter of this year.
The Mate 70 is Huawei's flagship model, unveiled last week at an event in Shenzhen. Richard Yu Chengdong, president of the company's consumer division, hailed the new models as "the most powerful Mate phones in history." Yu did not mention any details about the processor or why the release of the new series was delayed until after Singles' Day - the world's largest annual shopping festival.
The Mate 70 features artificial intelligence (AI) features and Huawei's own mobile operating system, HarmonyOS Next. The company says the latest phone has 40% better performance than the Mate 60.
The new lineup includes the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro+, and Mate 70 RS, which use the Kirin 9010 and 9020 mobile processors designed by HiSilicon. However, according to TechInsights , these chips “underperform” compared to the latest processors made by Qualcomm and MediaTek.
“Despite hardware improvements and new AI features, delayed releases and insignificant chip power upgrades could negatively impact sales,” TechInsights analysts Peng Peng and Linda Sui said in a report.
Amid continued geopolitical tensions, the Mate 60 smartphone sparked a wave of patriotic consumerism in China, helping to revive Huawei’s struggling smartphone business, allowing it to take on Apple and fellow Chinese rivals like Xiaomi. The Pura 70 series, which was later launched, also used a 7nm chip, bringing Huawei back to the top domestic Android brands.
According to research firm Counterpoint , Mate 70 sales are expected to exceed 10 million units over its lifetime, marking another important milestone for Huawei.
When Huawei started taking pre-orders for the Mate 70 on its online store, more than 3.2 million people signed up to buy it, but no deposit was required. The Mate 70 officially went on sale on December 4.
Still according to Counterpoint , Huawei's global sales in the first three quarters of 2024 increased by 51% compared to the same period in 2023, 90% coming from the mainland.
