Police did not give an estimate of the size of the "Czechia Against Poverty" protest. The demonstration was similar to another in March organized by the PRO party, which criticized Prime Minister Petr Fiala's center-right government for its handling of the energy crisis.

PRO has also criticized the government for undermining freedom of speech as part of its efforts to combat disinformation and called on the government to promote peace in the Ukraine war.

“Save the last shred of your honor, realize that you are not fit for the job and resign,” protest organizer and PRO leader Jindrich Rajchl told the crowd that filled half of Prague’s Wenceslas Square, according to the iDNES.cz news website.

The Czech Republic, like other countries in Europe, has been hit by rising inflation, which has soared to double digits over the past year, and high energy prices are cutting into household budgets.

A recent poll from Kantar for Czech television showed support for the government slipping, with the main opposition party, ANO of former prime minister Andrej Babis, widening its lead over Prime Minister Fiala's party to 29% to 20%.
