With the theme "Elderly people are promoted and fully cared for", during the recent Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam, localities and units in the province had many practical activities, especially towards the elderly in difficult circumstances.
Responding to the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam, the Elderly Association at all levels in the province has mobilized many resources to care for the elderly in difficulty.
Don't leave the disadvantaged behind
In a house with the scent of new paint, Mrs. Phan Thi Phung, 84 years old, in area 2, ward VII, Vi Thanh city, could not hide her joy when her dream of a spacious house came true. Mrs. Phung shared: “The old house of the family was built more than 20 years ago, although it has been degraded for a long time, but there are still conditions to repair it. Fortunately, thanks to the local government's attention, supporting my family with 100 million VND to repair the house, at the age near the end of life, I am very happy to be able to live in a new house.”
Ms. Phung is one of two elderly people with housing difficulties who received housing support from Vi Thanh city during the Month of Action for the Elderly in 2023.
Holding a gift from the Provincial Elderly Association, Ms. Le Thi Hai, in Hamlet 2A, Tan Hoa Commune, Chau Thanh A District, confided: “Knowing the difficult circumstances of my mother and I, every holiday, New Year or when we receive gifts from benefactors, the representatives of the Elderly Association of the commune and district always pay attention and support. Thanks to that, my family's life is somewhat less difficult. The locality also considers supporting capital so that my family can develop the family economy .” Due to not having any land for production, Ms. Hai's family's economy is very difficult, the main income of her and her children depends on selling lottery tickets on the street.
In recent times, the Elderly Associations at all levels in the province have also actively cared for the health of their members and the elderly. Mr. Pham Ngoc Anh, Head of the Representative Board of the Elderly Association of Long My District, informed: “During the Action Month for the Elderly this year, in addition to organizing meetings to give gifts to the elderly in difficult circumstances in communes and towns, visiting the elderly who are unfortunately sick... we also coordinated to implement the program of bright eyes for the elderly. The District Elderly Association coordinated with Can Tho Eye Hospital to organize eye examinations for 650 elderly people, the total cost of implementing the program of examination and providing medicine for eye diseases was more than 195 million VND”.
With the determination to provide timely support to members and the elderly in difficult circumstances, during this year's Action Month for the Elderly, communes and towns in Long My district mobilized to donate 1,340 gifts and necessities to poor elderly and elderly in difficult circumstances. The Elderly Association at all levels also supported 4 charity houses for elderly facing housing difficulties; coordinated periodic health check-ups for 9,034 elderly people... the total cost of mobilization during the Action Month was more than 635 million VND.
Peak season towards NCT
Responding to the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam in 2023, the Elderly Associations at all levels in the province have actively coordinated to organize diverse and rich activities to care for the elderly. Through this, many resources and funds are mobilized to organize activities to care for the elderly, especially those who are lonely, sick, or in especially difficult circumstances...
According to statistics compiled by the Provincial Elderly Association, during this year's Action Month, all levels of the association mobilized more than 12,134 gifts; built and repaired 30 houses for the elderly with housing difficulties; examined and provided medicine for eye diseases to 690 elderly people. The association also coordinated to mobilize the elderly aged 60-79 to participate in health insurance; coordinated with the health sector to organize periodic health examinations for 68,532 elderly people in localities... The total budget for mobilizing activities during the Action Month for the Elderly was more than 4.5 billion VND.
The Representative Board of the Association of the Elderly in districts, towns and cities organized many cultural, artistic and sports activities to celebrate the International Day of the Elderly on October 1 and the Month of Action for the Elderly in Vietnam, launched Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs; organized exchanges of health clubs, chess, cycling clubs, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quan, Head of the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board, said: “Along with the whole country, the Elderly Associations at all levels in the province focus on implementing many activities during the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam, this is considered a peak period of activities for members and the elderly in difficult circumstances. The theme of this year's Action Month is "The elderly are promoted and fully cared for". The Associations at all levels focus on directing activities to care for the elderly in especially difficult circumstances, lonely and homeless people and promoting the role of the elderly. To effectively implement, since August, the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board has directed associations at all levels to deploy and discuss many contents such as reviewing the subjects in need of support, mobilizing resources for implementation, forms of support, helping the elderly...".
Faced with such attention, the “big trees” in the province continue to maintain and promote their roles in many areas of life. In the area, nearly 3,635 elderly people participate in the work of the Party, government, Fatherland Front and mass organizations; nearly 9,504 healthy elderly members still directly participate in production, business and services...
In all areas of work, NCT always upholds a high sense of responsibility, actively dedicates efforts and ideas, contributes to socio-economic development, and maintains security and order in the locality.
