On the morning of May 28 in Hanoi, the Electricity Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) coordinated with the Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam to organize a workshop "Supporting Vietnam's energy transition journey".
The event is an important forum for both sides to affirm their strong commitment to promoting a fair energy transition, contributing to realizing Vietnam's sustainable development goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Mr. Tran Hoai Trang, Deputy Director of the Electricity Authority, Vietnam is entering the initial phase of the energy transition process. This is a pivotal stage to adapt to the rapid changes in the global energy industry.
Mr. Trang believes that, despite facing many challenges – such as the problem of ensuring energy security, domestic supply shortages, and increasing import pressure – Vietnam also has clear opportunities to build a stable, long-term foundation for green, sustainable economic development.
Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the orientation of national energy development to 2030, with a vision to 2045, has clearly pointed out the essential role of energy, especially electricity, in serving socio-economic development. However, the Resolution also frankly pointed out many shortcomings such as the unreasonable structure of power sources, the low rate of renewable energy and the increasing dependence on imported energy.
In that context, the shift to renewable energy, especially wind power and solar power, is identified as an inevitable direction, in line with world trends and Vietnam's available potential.

Norway joins Vietnam for a low-carbon future
Speaking at the workshop, Ms. Hilde Solbakken – Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam – highly appreciated Vietnam’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. According to her, Vietnam and Norway share a common priority, which is to effectively respond to climate change and move towards a low-carbon economy.
Ms. Solbakken emphasized that the Norwegian Government wishes to promote a partnership for a fair energy transition with Vietnam. Within this framework, Norway has committed to investing 250 million USD through the Northfund Climate Fund to support Vietnam's energy transition, especially in the field of offshore wind power. In addition, Norway is also actively participating in supporting Vietnam in developing a Marine Spatial Planning - an important foundation for developing offshore wind power projects in the future.
"We are also very interested in cooperation in green maritime transport, circular economy, waste recycling and coal reduction. The energy transition cannot be separated from technological solutions and innovation, in which the role of government and private enterprises are equally important," she emphasized.

Accompanying experienced countries like Norway will contribute significantly to helping Vietnam accelerate its energy transition journey. This is not only a roadmap for reducing emissions, but also an opportunity to restructure the energy sector towards a modern, self-sufficient and sustainable direction, laying a solid foundation for the development of a circular economy and a green society in the future.
