The Red Journey has truly become the largest and most effective blood donation campaign, leaving a deep impression on the more than 30-year journey of the voluntary blood donation movement in Vietnam. The program will last for 2 months, from (May 30 to July 30) in 48 provinces/cities and is expected to collect 100,000 units of blood.
Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan emphasized this at the opening ceremony of the 13th Red Journey (2025), chaired by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, in coordination with the Office of the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, VTVCorp Joint Stock Company, Blood Transfusion Centers, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation - Red Cross Association of 48 provinces/cities organized on May 30, in Hanoi.
The Deputy Minister of Health said that in 2013, facing a serious blood shortage during the summer nationwide, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, in coordination with other units, proposed the idea of organizing a cross-country blood donation campaign called Red Journey, which was implemented by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation.

Up to now, after 12 years, 59 provinces and cities nationwide have participated in the Red Journey, with nearly 1 million units of blood donated. These are impressive and proud numbers and results, a vivid testament to the persistence and strong influence of the mission of “Connecting Vietnamese Blood” over more than a decade. The Red Journey has truly become the largest and most effective blood donation campaign, leaving a deep impression on the more than 30-year development of the voluntary blood donation movement.
Over the years, the program has always received attention and support from all levels and units. Thanks to that, all over the country, every place the Red Journey passes through is filled with red - the red of the flag, the shirt, the blood, the fire of enthusiasm and diligence to collect precious life sources, prolonging the lives of patients.
Assessing the results of recent years, Associate Professor Nguyen Ha Thanh, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, affirmed that “connecting Vietnamese blood” is not simply a slogan, but a symbol of compassion, a vivid continuation of the nation’s patriotic tradition, where millions of Vietnamese hearts beat together for the community.

48 provinces/cities participating in organizing the Red Journey this year include: An Giang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Bac Giang, Bac Kan, Bac Ninh, Binh Dinh, Binh Thuan, Ca Mau, Cao Bang, Can Tho, Dak Lak, Dong Thap, Gia Lai, Ha Giang, Ha Nam, Hanoi , Ha Tinh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Hau Giang, Hoa Binh, Hue, Hung Yen, Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang, Kon Tum, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Lam Dong, Long An, Nghe An, Phu Tho, Phu Yen, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Quang Ninh, Soc Trang, Son La, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Tien Giang, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Long, Vinh Phuc, Yen Bai.
Of the 48 localities above, 5 provinces/cities have organized the Red Journey for 13 consecutive years: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa; 6 localities have organized it for 12 years: Can Tho, Binh Dinh, Dak Lak, Lang Son, Khanh Hoa, Tuyen Quang; 6 localities have organized it for 11 years: Ca Mau, Hai Phong, Kien Giang, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Thai Nguyen.

Launched in 2013 in response to the urgent need to ensure blood supply for emergency and treatment during the summer when blood is scarce, the Red Journey has grown stronger and stronger, attracting a large number of localities to participate, becoming the largest blood donation campaign. To date, after 12 events, the Red Journey has taken place in 59 provinces/cities, attracting millions of participants; organizing 3,104 blood donation points, receiving nearly 940,000 blood units. In particular, 2024 is the year with the largest number of participating localities (51 provinces/cities), organizing 341 blood donation points in 58 days and collecting 128,119 blood units.
Along with the national opening ceremony taking place at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion on May 30, the blood donation festival “Colors of the Red Journey” was also held with the hope that each participant would be a meaningful piece, a color of humanity in the journey of “connecting Vietnamese blood”./.
