A team of European astronomers says the Solar System may be moving through space at more than three times the speed previously estimated - a result that raises major questions for the standard cosmological model, considered the best framework currently available to describe the structure and evolution of the universe.
According to the study published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the team used the LOFAR radio telescope network and two other radio observatories to map the distribution of radio galaxies, which emit strong radio waves from “lobes” that extend far beyond the observable stellar structure.
Radio waves have long wavelengths, are less obscured by dust and gas, and are especially useful for measuring the motion of the Solar System: in the direction we are moving, there will be a slightly higher number of radio galaxies observed, but the difference is so small that it is only visible to very sensitive instruments.
“The analysis shows that the Solar System is moving more than three times faster than currently predicted,” said Lukas Böhme of Bielefeld University, who led the study. “This result clearly contradicts expectations based on standard cosmological models and forces us to reconsider many basic assumptions.”
According to the team, the “anisotropy” they recorded in the distribution of radio galaxies was 3.7 times stronger than the value predicted by the standard model. These results are consistent with previous infrared observations of quasars, celestial objects that power supermassive black holes, which shine brightly due to the emission of enormous energy from the matter surrounding the black hole.
“If the Solar System is really moving so fast, we need to rethink our fundamental assumptions about the large-scale structure of the universe,” said cosmologist Dominik J. Schwarz, a co-author of the study. “Or it could be that the radio galaxy distribution itself is not as uniform as we thought. Either way, current models are being challenged.”
