1. What is world heritage?

According to Clause 1, Article 3 of Decree 109/2017/ND-CP, World Cultural and Natural Heritage (hereinafter referred to as World Heritage) is a historical - cultural relic, a typical scenic spot of Vietnam with outstanding global value in culture and nature, recorded by the United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (hereinafter referred to as UNESCO) in the List of World Heritage.

2. How many World Heritage Sites are there in Vietnam now?

Currently, World Heritage in Vietnam recognized by UNESCO includes:

- Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

- Thang Long Imperial Citadel.

- Trang An scenic complex.

- Hoi An ancient town.

- My Son Sanctuary.

- Ho Dynasty Citadel

- Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago

- Hue Monuments Complex

Accordingly, the world heritage area is protected as for protection area I of historical - cultural relics and scenic spots according to the provisions of the law on cultural heritage. (Clause 1, Article 4, Decree 109/2017/ND-CP)

3. Duties of organizations assigned to manage and use world heritage

Article 16 of Decree 109/2017/ND-CP stipulates the tasks of organizations assigned to manage and use world heritage as follows:

- Develop and organize the implementation of short-term, medium-term and long-term plans for world heritage protection and management after approval by competent authorities.

- Periodically monitor the conservation status of world heritage as prescribed in Article 5 of Decree 109/2017/ND-CP, promptly prevent acts of encroachment on world heritage and report to competent authorities any risks of adverse impacts on world heritage.

- Implement programs, plans and investment projects in the field of preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of world heritage.

- Organize or cooperate to organize propaganda, promotion, display and introduction activities about world heritage; research, collect, document and archive documents about tangible cultural heritage and related intangible cultural heritage to serve the preservation, restoration, rehabilitation and embellishment of world heritage; preserve, research and collect relics, antiques, national treasures, geological specimens, animals and plants at world heritage and display and exhibit mobile exhibitions outside the scope of world heritage; organize performances and introductions of intangible cultural heritage associated with world heritage.

- Applying science and technology to the protection, preservation, restoration, and embellishment of world heritage; preserving geological, geomorphological, and aesthetic values; preserving and developing flora and fauna to maintain the biodiversity value of world heritage; organizing activities to prevent and combat natural disasters, search and rescue, collect and treat waste, protect and prevent agents that are harmful to the environment and water resources at world heritage; contributing to improving the lives of the community; participating in research and proposing processes and regulations for the preservation, restoration, and promotion of world heritage values.

- Guiding and explaining to tourists at world heritage sites; organizing or cooperating to organize tourism activities and services to serve the public in visiting, researching, studying and entertaining at world heritage sites; assessing the impact of tourism activities on world heritage sites and proposing solutions to minimize impacts that reduce the outstanding global value of world heritage sites (if any).

- Organize ticket sales, collect entrance and service fees; manage and use revenue sources according to the provisions of law.

- Develop and implement training plans, foster and improve professional qualifications for civil servants, public employees and workers.

- Promote awareness and community participation in the protection and management of world heritage.

- Participate in managing, linking and supervising investment activities, environmental protection, conservation and development of organisms in the world heritage area and the buffer zone of the world heritage area; coordinate with relevant levels and sectors to inspect and supervise socio-economic activities in the world heritage area and the buffer zone of the world heritage area.

- Coordinate with relevant levels and sectors to appraise and submit to competent authorities for approval plans, projects, and socio-economic development programs in world heritage areas and buffer zones of world heritage areas according to current regulations; organize information, discussions, and collect community opinions on plans, projects, and socio-economic development programs related to world heritage.

- Organize and implement international cooperation programs.

- Implement the information and reporting regime periodically and suddenly on the implementation of the task of protecting and managing world heritage to the Provincial People's Committee or the ministry or branch directly assigned to manage world heritage, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

- Perform other tasks assigned by competent authorities.
