Coach Emery worried about losing to Man Utd

VnExpressVnExpress26/12/2023

England have made a strong impression since the beginning of the tournament, but coach Unai Emery is still concerned when Aston Villa visits Man Utd in round 19 of the Premier League.

"Once again we have the challenge of playing away," Emery said of the Old Trafford game. "Usually playing away is more difficult than playing at home."

Aston Villa are third with 39 points from 18 games. They are just one point behind leaders Arsenal. However, when asked about Aston Villa's success, Emery replied that results should only be judged after 38 games. He also stressed that the team is only halfway through the journey and still requires a lot from themselves.

United are currently eighth with 28 points, 11 behind Aston Villa. Emery is excited about facing a team who were rated higher at the start of the season. "It will be a very good game for us in terms of how we can deal with them, how we were above them until round 19, and how we can deal with the opponents who were rated higher at the start," he said, recalling the results of their previous encounters with the top seven: 5-1 loss to Newcastle, 3-0 to Liverpool, 1-0 wins to Chelsea, 6-1 to Brighton, 2-1 to Tottenham, 1-0 to Man City and 1-0 to Arsenal.

Aston Villa are on a seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Man Utd have drawn and lost their last three games. In all competitions, the "Red Devils" have failed to score in four consecutive matches.

Last season, Man Utd finished third in the Premier League, while Aston Villa finished seventh. Climbing to third after nearly the first half of this season is a huge step forward for Emery and his team, especially when they only invested about $100 million in the summer transfer market, half as much as Man Utd.

Hosting Aston Villa is Man Utd's first match after announcing the news that billionaire Jim Ratcliffe bought 25% of the shares. According to the British press, Ratcliffe will run Man Utd's sports division, while the Glazers will still control the commercial side. If the "Red Devils" continue to lose, the new owner may fire coach Erik Ten Hag.
