Coach Emery fears losing to Man Utd.

VnExpressVnExpress26/12/2023

Aston Villa have been making a strong impression since the start of the season, but manager Unai Emery remains concerned as Aston Villa visit Manchester United in the 19th round of the Premier League.

"Once again, we face the challenge of playing away from home," Emery said of the match at Old Trafford. "It's usually harder playing away than at home."

Aston Villa are currently third with 39 points after 18 matches. They are just one point behind leaders Arsenal. However, when asked about his success with Aston Villa, Emery replied that results should only be judged after 38 rounds. He also emphasized that the team is only halfway through the season and still has a lot to offer.

Man Utd are currently eighth with 28 points, 11 points behind Aston Villa. Emery is excited about facing a team that was considered stronger at the start of the season. "This will be a very good game for us in terms of how we can compete against them, how we finished above them until round 19, and how we compete against opponents who were initially considered stronger," he said, while also recalling the results of previous encounters with the top seven: a 1-5 loss to Newcastle, a 0-3 loss to Liverpool, but wins against Chelsea 1-0, Brighton 6-1, Tottenham 2-1, Man City 1-0, and Arsenal 1-0.

Aston Villa are currently on a seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Man Utd have drawn and lost their last three matches. Across all competitions, the "Red Devils" have failed to score in four consecutive games.

Last season, Man Utd finished third in the Premier League, while Aston Villa came in seventh. Climbing to third place after almost half the season this year is a huge step forward for Emery's team, especially considering they only invested around $100 million in the summer transfer market, half the amount Man Utd spent.

The match against Aston Villa is Manchester United's first game after announcing that billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has acquired a 25% stake. According to the English press, Ratcliffe will run Manchester United's sporting division, while the Glazer family will retain control of the commercial side. If the "Red Devils" continue to lose, the new owner may sack manager Erik Ten Hag.
