This is a somewhat strange decision by coach Shin Tae-yong because there are only 3 days left for the Indonesian team to enter the most important training phase.
Initially, Shin Tae-yong announced 15 players before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers took place. Some special names playing abroad such as Marselino Ferdinan (Oxford United), Arhan Pratama (Suwon), Asnawi Mangkualam (Port FC) or Ronaldo Kwateh (Muangthong United) were all named. For the rest, Shin summoned a series of "unknown" players.

However, on November 23, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) suddenly revealed that the trio of naturalized players Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner will participate in the AFF Cup 2024. On the contrary, Maarten Paes - a goalkeeper who is not tied to a schedule in the US professional league - was absent.
The Indonesian national championship is still going on and coach Shin Tae-yong continues to ask his assistants to watch the matches to "pave the sand for gold".
But with 8 names yet to be revealed, it is possible that Mr. Shin wants to create a "smokescreen" for his compatriot Kim Sang-sik. The Indonesian team can completely add more naturalized players or some domestic stars such as Rizky Ridho, Witan Sulaeman or Ernando Ari. This depends on the determination and goals of PSSI before the AFF Cup 2024.
" It is true that the Indonesian team will participate in the AFF Cup 2024 with many young players under the age of U22, so the team's strength will be weaker than other countries. We still have to try our best and aim to reach the final of the tournament. Our ability is like that and Indonesian football is developing. Honestly, the goal of reaching the AFF Cup final is something that Indonesian football needs to do, " said coach Shin Tae-yong.
Indonesia is in Group B with Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos. They will play their opening match against Myanmar on December 9.
