Ho Chi Minh - master of language use

Việt NamViệt Nam16/05/2024

President Ho Chi Minh was an excellent politician and also a master of using language as a tool and weapon to achieve political goals. One of the language tools that people often use in their speeches and writings is argumentation. President Ho Chi Minh was famous for his sharp and strong arguments declaring the sovereignty, independence and freedom of the nation and other issues.

Using political literature for political struggle

Ho Chi Minh 's political writings are often short, concise, tightly argued, rich in polemics and diverse in writing style; revealing sharp thinking, rich in cultural knowledge, linking theory with practice. His political writing style is also diverse: "Sometimes gentle, understanding, reasonable, sometimes resolute, strong, eloquent".

He wrote political essays with the purpose of political struggle, directly attacking the enemy, enlightening the masses, expressing the revolutionary mission of the nation through historical stages. There are some of Uncle Ho's political essays that are not only works of hot political nature of the time, works expressing thoughts of human stature, but they also stand out with their skillful and excellent writing art.

The French colonial regime's verdict denounced the crimes of French colonialism in the colonies. The work condemned the brutal policies, heinous crimes, evil plots, and evil nature of the colonialists, calling on slaves to unite and fight for national liberation. The work is not only a valuable historical and theoretical document, but also has great literary value, and is deeply topical, so it easily touches the hearts of readers.

The Declaration of Independence is a historical document announcing to the entire nation and the world the birth of an independent Vietnam. The work has a concise, concise structure, tight arguments, solid reasoning, authentic evidence, eloquent language, rich in expression, expressing Uncle Ho's noble feelings for the nation, the People, and humanity: "The entire Vietnamese nation is determined to devote all its spirit and strength, lives and property to maintain that freedom and independence." And so, the persuasiveness of the political essay to readers lies not only in its sharp, exemplary system of arguments, but also in the author's profound, profound feelings.

The call for national resistance was the “Proclamation to Save the Country”, which encouraged the patriotic spirit of all people to rise up against the invaders: “Any man, any woman, any old person, any young person, regardless of religion, party, or ethnicity. Anyone who is Vietnamese must stand up to fight the French colonialists, to save the Fatherland. Whoever has a gun, use a gun. Whoever has a sword, use a sword, and whoever does not have a sword, use a hoe, a shovel, or a stick. Everyone must strive to fight the colonialists and save the country”. The call for national resistance was the heroic piece of literature that opened the 9-year-long national resistance war against the French colonialists and ended with the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom , which represents the indomitable will of the Vietnamese people, which has been forged through thousands of years of fighting against foreign invaders, building and defending the country. This is an immortal truth, with profound theoretical, practical and contemporary values; it is the source of strength that created the victory of the Vietnamese people in the struggle for national independence. At the same time, it is also a great source of encouragement and motivation for progressive humanity, especially for oppressed peoples in the world to rise up and fight for peace, freedom and happiness.

Tight, logical and easy to understand

Political writing requires logical reasoning and tight arguments with clear and coherent points, arguments, and evidence. Therefore, in his political writing, Uncle Ho often used many connecting words such as: and, with, or, although, but, to, but, therefore, because of that... to increase persuasiveness, making the political writing tight, logical, and easy to understand. For example, when discussing the ethics of a revolutionary, Uncle Ho wrote: “In short: Pride will definitely lead to failure. Because pride inevitably goes hand in hand with flattery. If you are proud, you will hate people who are more talented than you and love those who flatter you. Be close to people who are incompetent and powerless, but are good at flattery and following the crowd. Keep away from or suppress talented, virtuous people who speak frankly. How can you avoid failure like that?”

To be effective, political writing must have strong appeal and inspiration. In addition to argumentative value, political writing also shows its value in its eloquent and passionate tone, revealing the writer's enthusiasm. To affirm the indomitable will, determination to fight for independence and freedom, he wrote: "A nation that has courageously fought against French slavery for more than 80 years, a nation that has courageously stood with the allies against fascism for several years. That nation must be free! That nation must be independent."

The author's eloquent, strong declaration, with his strong, solid arguments, creates a strong appeal and inspiration to listeners and readers: "Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence, and in fact has become a free and independent country. The entire Vietnamese people are determined to devote all their spirit and strength, their lives and property to maintain that freedom and independence." That strong affirmation placed by Uncle Ho at the end of the Declaration of Independence has a strong inspiration. It is arranged according to the common morality in the thinking of the masses, so it easily penetrates their awareness.

Ho Chi Minh always considered language an important means to serve the cause of spreading revolutionary ideals, a weapon to fight against the enemy, an effective tool to express thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Therefore, his writings and speeches were always close, simple, truthful, profound, moving and easy to touch people's hearts.

The will is an advice and a heartfelt sentiment, a deep belief that Uncle Ho left to the entire Party, the entire people, the entire army and future generations. Speaking of his passing, Uncle Ho gently "softened" the issue by quoting Du Fu's poem: "Nhan sinh that thap co lai hy". By citing that, Uncle Ho wanted to emphasize: living to the age of 79 is rare for everyone... But anyway, an unusual passing is very possible; therefore, writing "these words, in case I go to see Karl Marx, Lenin and other revolutionary elders" is necessary... The opening paragraph is simple, unique, full of humanity and highly convincing, touching people's hearts. Because Uncle Ho's way of speaking is very reasonable and emotional. Reasonable means that the paragraph is written logically and logically. Emotional means that each sentence, each word exudes his passionate feelings.

To promote the effectiveness of the political writing genre, President Ho Chi Minh paid special attention to the use of language and he was known as a master in the use of language. He had a very unique and special writing style. Few words but deep meaning, very specific comparisons, sharp and tight arguments and accurate conclusions. No matter how big, complex and abstract the issues were, with his clear writing style and carefully selected words, his articles were concise, simple, easy to understand and easy to convince the recipient.

Ho Chi Minh used his pen as a weapon to serve his political purposes. His political literature has many different genres such as: Proclamations, appeals, declarations, political reports, editorials, comments on newspapers, radio and television, current affairs talks... which opened the way for the advanced political literature of the proletariat in our country, contributing to the attractiveness of modern Vietnamese political literature.
