Workshop "Conservation of genetic resources of endemic, precious and rare medicinal plants of the Northwest highlands"

On the morning of November 14, in Sa Pa ward, the Institute of Medicinal Materials (Ministry of Health) coordinated with Hoang Lien National Park to organize a workshop on "Conserving the genetic resources of endemic, precious and rare medicinal plants of the Northwest highlands".

Attending the workshop were leaders and former leaders of the Institute of Medicinal Materials; representatives of the Ministry of Science and Technology ; leaders of Hoang Lien National Park, medicinal material companies, medicinal material cooperatives and some households of Ta Van and Ban Ho communes (Lao Cai).

The project "Research on conservation of endemic, precious and rare medicinal plant genetic resources of the Northwest highland region" was assigned by the Ministry of Science and Technology to the Institute of Medicinal Materials to preside over and implement, from March 2023 to November 2025, with the goal of sustainably conserving endemic, precious and rare medicinal plant genetic resources of the Northwest highland region as a basis for building a National Medicinal Plant Conservation and Development Garden.

In 2 years (2023 - 2024), the project team investigated and collected 617 specimens of endemic, precious and rare medicinal plant genetic resources of 239 species and 2 varieties, 147 genera of 91 plant families in the Northwest region. In Lao Cai alone, the team investigated and collected 243 endemic, precious and rare medicinal plant genetic resources of 188 plant species.

The project team has delimited ex-situ conservation areas; propagated genetic resources; investigated the current status of development and exploitation of medicinal plants; the current status of forests and difficulties and limitations in the conservation and development of medicinal plants within the Hoang Lien National Park, Lao Cai province.

At the workshop, representatives of the Institute of Medicinal Materials, Hoang Lien National Park, medicinal materials cooperatives and a number of households discussed and clarified the potential, advantages, causes, limitations and proposed solutions in preserving endemic, precious and rare medicinal plants of the Northwest highlands and developing medicinal plants in a sustainable direction.

According to the assessment at the workshop, the announcement of the results of the project is an important basis for proposing a plan for sustainable conservation of endemic, precious and rare medicinal plant resources of the Northwest highlands and for building a national medicinal plant conservation and development garden.
