A handful of Republicans have turned their backs on Trump in recent weeks to support Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, The Guardian reported on September 18. The endorsement for Harris was drafted in a joint letter by former Republican foreign policy and national security officials.

In the letter, the former Republican officials said: "We believe that the US president must be a principled, serious and steady leader."
Although they disagree with Ms. Harris on many domestic and foreign policy issues, former Republican officials believe that the current vice president possesses the necessary qualities to succeed US President Joe Biden.
"We strongly oppose Mr. Trump's campaign. As president, he has promoted chaos in government, praised our enemies, undermined our allies, politicized our military, devalued our veterans, prioritized personal interests over the interests of the American people, and gone against our nation's values," the letter said.

The former officials who wrote the letter served under former presidents Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, George W Bush, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
Several Republican members of Congress also signed the letter in support of Vice President Harris. Some of the notable former officials who signed the letter include former Defense Secretaries William Cohen and Chuck Hagel, former FBI Director William Webster, and former CIA Director Michael Hayden.
Several former officials who served under Mr. Trump also joined the letter in support of Ms. Harris, including former special assistant to the president Mark Havey and former assistant secretary of homeland security Elizabeth Neumann.
