More than half of the US population dislikes Elon Musk

The less-than-positive view of Musk has somewhat affected the overall political strength of the Republican Party.

Elon Musk’s popularity is on the decline, according to the latest Silver Bulletin poll by renowned political data analyst Nate Silver. In addition to being the CEO of multiple companies, Elon Musk has been the face of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for the past few months.

53.5% of respondents had an unfavorable view of Musk, up from 38% at the start of 2024, while only 39.6% had a positive view. Silver said the survey was conducted using the same process as Trump, but because Elon Musk had less data, the survey was tweaked to avoid bias.

The survey found that Musk’s negative views increased when he publicly supported Trump’s second-term campaign, including paying voters. The numbers continued to rise shortly after he began working for DOGE, an organization that is overhauling the US government bureaucracy.

This result may be controversial because Silver Bulletin is only a newsletter and not a polling organization like Gallup or Pew Research. However, many previous surveys on this issue have produced similar results.

A Harvard Harris poll published in late March, conducted on 2,746 Americans, showed that their views of Elon Musk had shifted from neutral to minus 10 points. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from March 31 to April 2, 57% of respondents had an unfavorable view of Musk.

Only 36% of respondents said the Trump administration is doing a good job of reducing the number of federal employees. Even more, only 31% believe DOGE’s government downsizing is being done effectively without affecting essential services.

And according to a Fox News national poll conducted in mid-March, 58% of Americans disapprove of Musk’s work at DOGE. A majority believe that most government spending is wasteful and inefficient. They also worry that planning has been inadequate.

According to The Verge , negative views about Musk seem to have affected political elections, typically the election event that took place in Wisconsin in early April. Here, Musk spent about 20 million USD to support Brad Schimel, a candidate backed by the Republican Party.

The Washington Post reported that more than half of voters in the state disapproved of his intervention, and about a third said it made them less likely to vote for a conservative judge. Ultimately, Democratic-backed candidate Susan Crawford won by 10 points.

In early April, the White House confirmed that Musk would be leaving his role at DOGE on a 130-day schedule, ending next May, once his efforts are complete. “We’re in no rush. But there will come a time, you know, when he’ll have to leave,” President Trump said.
