Vietnam-UK medical cooperation opens new era in medical training and research

Recently, at Oxford University, UK, Tam Anh Research Institute under Tam Anh General Hospital and Oxford University announced a cooperation contract on training, research and innovation in healthcare, witnessed by General Secretary To Lam.

The event took place within the framework of the General Secretary 's State visit to the UK and his talk with the UK-Vietnam high-level intellectual community. This is also a practical implementation step from the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two sides signed in January 2025.

This cooperation marks an important step forward in elevating medical research and training high-quality human resources in Vietnam, while opening up opportunities to apply advanced medical solutions in clinical practice.

In front of a large number of professors, researchers and young intellectuals, General Secretary To Lam emphasized that we need a new, practical cooperation model that directly benefits the people of the two countries, combining basic science, high technology, biomedicine, public health, and higher education with the needs of digital transformation, green transformation and improving the quality of human resources in Vietnam.

The signing of an official cooperation contract between the Tam Anh Research Institute and Oxford University focuses on priority areas: training and improving research capacity for clinical doctors, implementing applied research topics in Vietnam, and jointly funding and publishing international science, with research results being directly applied to clinical practice.

In the first phase, the two sides will organize training courses to improve management capacity, scientific research and medical data management for Vietnamese scientists and medical managers. It is expected that in December 2025, three intensive training courses will be opened with the direct participation of Oxford University professors.

Tam Anh Research Institute and Tam Anh General Hospital System currently own modern facilities, such as the "super machine" CT with more than 100,000 slices, the new generation Da Vinci Xi surgical robot, ready to apply research results to medical examination and treatment. Research projects will focus on diseases that are global challenges and increasing in Vietnam such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke.

On this occasion, the two sides also announced the official website of the Tam Anh Oxford Partnership (TOP) cooperation program, expected to launch in early November 2025, to update training courses, research projects and global expert exchange programs.

Associate Professor Proochista Ariana, member of the University Council in charge of international development at Oxford University, said that Oxford University highly appreciates the opportunity for cooperation, aiming to build research culture and capacity, create scientific evidence to support policy making and improve the health of Vietnamese people.

Dr. Phuong Le Tri, Executive Director of Tam Anh Research Institute, said that to reach an agreement with Oxford, Tam Anh has prepared a solid foundation of modern facilities, a methodical research process and a high-quality staff, while taking advantage of the prestige, creativity and outstanding practical capacity of the Tam Anh General Hospital system and related medical centers such as VNVC.
