Huawei launches internal software system after 3 years of US "ban"

Huawei Technologies said on April 20 that it is replacing internal software management systems from US suppliers with its own in-house version, a victory the company sees as a victory over US curbs that once threatened its existence.

Huawei held a ceremony to celebrate the transition to its own “MetaERP” (enterprise resource planning system) in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, southern China, attended by Huawei Rotating Chairwoman Meng Wanzhou, daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei.

ERP software is used by companies to manage key business operations, from accounting to supply chain management. In a press release, Huawei said Meta-ERP has been deployed in 80 percent of its business operations.

While it remains unclear whether Huawei intends to commercialize its ERP system and compete with the likes of Oracle and SAP, it could be a potential new business area that could help the company diversify its operations after its smartphone business was hit hard by US trade sanctions.

The US decision to blacklist Huawei in 2019 cut off the company from many domestically and internationally produced goods, as well as from importing and exporting critical equipment needed for 5G infrastructure.

Huawei's MetaERP plan was revealed by Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei in March.

Huawei has replaced more than 13,000 components in its product line with local products and redesigned more than 4,000 circuit boards in the past three years in response to US trade sanctions , Mr. Ren said.
