Since the beginning of May, the market for essential goods in Hung Yen province has continuously recorded price adjustments, notably food, necessities, milk, gas, etc. have all increased in price. This price increase is mainly due to the average electricity price being adjusted up from May 10, leading to increased production and service costs, forcing many people to tighten their spending.
Ms. Tran Thi Lan Anh, in Lac Dao commune (Van Lam) shared: “Since the electricity price increased, my family's electricity bill has increased significantly. The rent has also just increased from 1.5 million VND to 1.7 million VND/month. Including electricity, my husband and I have to spend about 2.3 million VND/month on accommodation”. What worries her more is that her job is unstable, since June her income has decreased by nearly 2 million VND, but prices are still "silently" climbing.
To balance her expenses, Ms. Lan Anh had to cut back on many expenses: I don't let my children travel this summer, and this summer's talent classes have to be postponed...
According to traditional markets such as Gao market, Pho Hien market (Hung Yen city) or Phu market (Khoai Chau), pork prices have increased sharply compared to the beginning of the year. Ms. Do Thi Thia, Phung Hung commune (Khoai Chau) said: I go to the market every day so I can clearly feel the price increase of many essential goods and foods. Meat, fish... all increased by about 10 - 15% compared to the beginning of the year, pork alone increased by about 20% compared to the beginning of the year...
Not only fresh food, but also food service prices have been affected. At office lunch restaurants on Nguyen Van Linh Street (Hung Yen City), the price of a meal has increased from 40,000 VND to 45,000 - 50,000 VND in the past month. The owner of a restaurant here explained: The price of raw materials has increased, so the selling price has to be increased, otherwise, they will lose money.
The same situation also happened at noodle and pho shops in the province, with an increase of 3,000 - 5,000 VND/serving. Ms. Cuc in Hien Nam ward (Hung Yen city) said that her family's living expenses in May increased by about 15% compared to the same period last year. Previously, I bought a carton of 180ml milk for 720,000 VND, now it is 780,000 VND.
At some milk stores in Hung Yen city, many types of powdered milk and liquid milk, both domestic and imported, have had their prices adjusted up by 10-15% compared to the beginning of the year.
Many other essential goods such as cooking oil, sugar, spices, etc. have also adjusted their prices. Ms. Hai, a grocery store owner in Khoai Chau town (Khoai Chau), commented: Normally, prices will cool down at the beginning of the year, but this year it is the opposite. Each item has increased by 5-10%, making the store's profit less while purchasing power has decreased.
Faced with rising price pressures, many families are cutting back on non-essential spending, prioritizing essential foods and living expenses.
According to information from the Hung Yen Provincial Statistics Office, in May 2025, the province's total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue were estimated at VND 8,174 billion, up 5.69% over the previous month and down 7.35% over the same period last year. The consumer price index (CPI) in May decreased by 0.09% over the previous month but increased by 3.30% over the same period in 2024, mainly due to increased prices of food, housing, medicine and medical services.
Faced with economic pressure, many families have to change their habits to adapt, spend with a specific plan, only spend on essential needs; take advantage of shopping on digital platforms with discounts and promotions...
