New direction in poultry farming

BPO - In the context of fluctuating prices of agricultural products, small-scale poultry farming models with little investment capital are becoming the direction of many households. Among them, models of raising super-egg-laying chickens and ducks are typical.

Raising super-laying chickens, collecting eggs for money

In 2023, Mr. Phan Hong An's family in Bu Gia Phuc 1 village, Phu Nghia commune, Bu Gia Map district chose the model of raising super egg-laying chickens to develop the economy. Although he only has 400 square meters of land, Mr. An has invested in a system of coops and farms to raise about 2,000 chickens. Mr. An said that the initial investment capital to raise 2,000 chickens is about 240 million VND, including breeding stock and coops. The area where his family lives has a small population and fresh air, so he designed an open coop, built an iron frame, and covered it with corrugated iron for a roof. This method helps keep the breeding environment cool and does not affect the surrounding households. The chicken coop system is scientifically designed and consulted by the breeding company to save space but still has enough space for the chickens to be comfortable.

The model of raising 2,000 super egg-laying chickens of Mr. Phan Hong An in Phu Nghia commune, Bu Gia Map district brings in an average income of 4.3-4.6 million VND/day.

“Chickens will start laying eggs after 4-5 months. Every morning, I come to take care of them and collect the eggs. At this time, the chickens are almost 1 year old, this is the stage when the chickens are most productive. With 2,000 DABACO chickens, I collect 1,750-1,800 eggs per day. The laying rate is 85-90% per day. If sold to a wholesale company, the selling price is only 1,200-1,300 VND/egg. But if sold to local people, the retail price is 2,500-2,600 VND/egg, equivalent to about 4.3-4.6 million VND/egg per day,” Mr. An shared.

Mr. An added that in order for chickens to lay high productivity, high quality eggs and be favored by the market, chickens must be carefully cared for, vaccinated from the time they are bought a few days old until the entire egg exploitation period, paying special attention to vaccinating chickens against diarrhea and flu. In addition to feeding the chickens enough food and keeping the coop clean, he also occasionally gives the chickens supplements and electrolytes to improve their resistance, thereby limiting diseases and helping the chickens lay eggs regularly. After 2 years of egg exploitation, the exhausted chickens must be replaced. At that time, the company will buy back the discarded chickens and provide new breeds for the family.

Stable income from ducks

With the advantage of a rubber plantation of more than 4 hectares, Mr. Trinh Minh Giam's family in Soc Qua hamlet, Tan Hung commune, Hon Quan district has become rich from the model of raising poultry under the rubber canopy, including 1,000 Muscovy ducks and 250 super egg-laying ducks. Mr. Giam has been a commune veterinary officer for many years, so his knowledge of poultry care is very systematic.

Mr. Giam said: For Muscovy ducks, due to their strong antibodies, they are less likely to get sick and grow quickly. Normally, large-scale breeders only feed their ducks with compound feed. However, I also add some other types of food to improve the quality of the meat, thereby increasing their competitiveness in the market. When they are young, Muscovy ducks are fed entirely with compound pellet feed. When the ducks are 35 days old, I start mixing in corn and rice to create lean meat. Changing the feed regularly helps the ducks eat more and grow faster. Muscovy ducks usually have to be raised for 90 days, then their feathers will be beautiful, eye-catching, and can be sold at a high price. On average, each Muscovy duck from when it is young until it is sold usually eats about 8-9kg of feed. The average price of feed is about 10,000 VND/kg. Therefore, the cost of raising 1,000 Muscovy ducks is about 80-90 million VND. When fully grown, the male reaches about 3.5kg, the female about 2.5kg. If the average selling price is 50 thousand VND/kg or more, the farmer will make a profit.

Mr. Giam raises both Muscovy ducks and super egg-laying ducks in a flock-raising method. As for super egg-laying ducks, he only develops them for 1 year and then liquidates them. During the raising process, Mr. Giam draws on his experience and shares the secret to achieving a high egg-laying rate. “Laying ducks must be fed well. At night, the lights should be turned off and noise should be limited to help the ducks rest quietly. During the day, the ducks must have a cool, relaxing space. In particular, breeding ducks need to be vaccinated, otherwise they are susceptible to enteritis, diarrhea, and a high mortality rate. Although it is only my wife and I who take care of the poultry, the work is not too hard, and the income is stable,” Mr. Giam shared.

Small-scale poultry farming models, especially raising super egg-laying chickens and ducks, have the advantage of low initial investment capital, not requiring large farming space, and stable output. Therefore, these safe and sustainable models are the choice of many farmers, especially those starting out.
