Early career guidance, choosing the right major

Through field trips and experiences at universities, high school students have the opportunity to access modern learning and research environments, interact with lecturers and students, as well as learn about the actual training professions. This is a practical activity, contributing to connecting general education with university education, contributing to orienting the future of students.

Help students with career orientation

To help students better understand the training professions at universities, recently, Viet Nhat Primary, Secondary and High School took high school students to visit and experience career orientation at the following schools: Foreign Language University, Polytechnic University, University of Economics (University of Danang ).

This activity helps students have the opportunity to learn about the university learning environment and orient their future career. At the same time, it provides a realistic perspective on the learning space, facilities, student life, and training majors of universities. By participating in the experience, students are shared by lecturers about career orientation as well as have their questions answered to help them shape their future career choices.

After the field trip, Nguyen Ngoc Hung Thinh (student of Viet Nhat Primary, Secondary and High School) expressed his impression of the modern and dynamic learning environment as well as the spacious space of the University of Technology. Through the experiential activities, the final year students better understood their future careers, opportunities for self-development when becoming students and were more confident in their choices.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Huu Man, Head of Training Department, Danang University of Economics, said that over the years, the school has always considered career guidance and experience activities for high school students as an important part of enrollment and educational communication.

Through programs such as: “A day as a DUE student”, “Campus tour - Discover DUE”, or “Career orientation day”, students have the opportunity to experience the real university learning environment. They can directly attend simulation classes, meet lecturers and students to better understand the training majors, business cooperation programs, and international links.

In addition to welcoming students to school, the University of Economics also proactively went to high schools such as Le Quy Don, Phan Chau Trinh, Hoang Hoa Tham, and many schools in Quang Nam (old), Quang Ngai, Hue and the Central Highlands to advise students on choosing majors and career guidance.

Similarly, the University of Technical Education (University of Danang) is also often chosen by high schools for tours, career counseling, and experience activities, especially STEM education.

Dr. Nguyen Linh Nam, Vice Principal of the school, said that the school focuses on linking theoretical training with practice, research with application, considering STEM education as a bridge between university and high school. Through activities of scientific research experience, technical design and technology application, students can develop a love for exploring technology, thereby forming awareness and understanding to have appropriate orientations in choosing future careers.

Integrating career guidance into the educational program

Associate Professor Dr. Vo Ngoc Duong, Head of the Faculty of Hydraulic Construction, University of Technology, assessed that career guidance activities and experiences of high school students at university help students grasp information and career trends. They have the opportunity to visualize more clearly the learning space, teaching methods and student life. This helps students determine more accurately their interests, abilities and career orientation, avoiding the situation of choosing a major emotionally or following trends.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Vo Ngoc Duong, career guidance activities should be implemented early, at the beginning of the grade or the beginning of the final year, to help students have time to adjust their orientation and choose a suitable major. Early counseling will help students have a basis to compare their interests and social needs, thereby choosing a suitable career.

Sharing the same view, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Huu Man said that high school students experiencing the university environment early brings many practical values. The school has carefully prepared diverse and lively career orientation activities, such as simulation classroom experiences; career orientation workshops and talkshows shared by lecturers, alumni and accompanying businesses, helping students to more clearly define their future career orientation, and gain a deeper understanding of each field the school is training, especially new majors.

Accordingly, these activities not only help students clearly identify their career orientation but also contribute to increasing brand awareness and creating a connection channel between the school and parents and students. Many high schools proactively coordinate with schools to organize experiential programs for students.

In 2026, the University of Economics plans to launch many new training programs. The school will increase communication and career counseling at high schools, helping students and parents understand the value, learning path, and career opportunities that these programs bring.

To increase effectiveness, high schools should integrate career guidance into the educational program through specialized activities, skills or orientation by industry group. Universities can accompany high school teachers in developing content, providing documents, or directly participating in advising students.

“On the university side, schools need to proactively bring university closer to students by establishing cooperation programs, sharing training resources, learning materials and on-site career support lecturers. In addition, developing a common career guidance platform between universities and high schools will help students easily look up information on careers, job trends and receive online advice from experts,” Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Huu Man suggested.
