Huong Xuan has more than 20km of border with Laos. Traffic, terrain, and many forests and mountains make the economic development of the people in the border area face many difficulties. Among them, Giang 2 village with 17 households (54 people) of the Chut ethnic group settled and lived is the most difficult place. People lack land for production, and their daily water depends entirely on streams; hunger and shortages persist from year to year.
With the synchronous participation, up to now, the border village that was once associated with persistent poverty is changing day by day. Mr. Ho Van Son (Chief of Giang 2 village) shared: “After many efforts of the people and support from all levels and sectors, Giang 2 village has converted 1.5 hectares of wasteland into rice fields. Last year's crop (2024), households in the village harvested more than 7 tons of rice. At the same time, households were supported with capital for economic development such as buying cow breeds, building barns, fertilizers, planting grass, vegetables, corn, potatoes, rice, fruit trees... to increase income, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty. Our village has also built a spacious community cultural house and a number of other cultural institutions.”
After merging and operating the 2-level local government model, Huong Xuan commune continues to pay special attention to ethnic minorities. Recently, the Party Committee and local government have called for socialization and support for the villagers to add more rice threshing machines to motivate them in production. At the same time, the clean water system in the village is also being sponsored by businesses and urgently constructed to contribute to improving the lives and health of the people.
Not only Giang 2 village, Huong Xuan commune always focuses on investing in infrastructure systems to promote economic and social development associated with ensuring national defense and border security; gradually improving spiritual and material life, so that people can confidently develop production, stabilize their lives and stay in the border area for a long time. In recent years, the locality has sought many ways to pull people out of poverty. Sustainable poverty reduction programs have been implemented in the direction of "giving fishing rods", especially supporting livelihoods, livestock, and crop varieties for poor and near-poor households.
As for Mr. Le Huu Long (Vinh Hung village, Huong Xuan commune), the sow is not only a livelihood but also a motivation for the family to rise up in life. Due to a traffic accident, his family's economy became increasingly exhausted. While facing difficulties, he was supported with a sow to build a livelihood model. He said: "Since receiving the cow, I have had more motivation to work and produce, and have the confidence to escape poverty. From a poor household, I am now a near-poor household and I believe that I will soon escape poverty sustainably."
It is worth mentioning that the change in Huong Xuan is not simply due to support, but more importantly, a new labor "rhythm" has been formed here. Previously, many households were only used to receiving support once and then stopped, not seeing the value of maintaining the model. Through propaganda, people began to realize that poverty reduction is not a matter of a day or two, but a process that requires perseverance. Mr. Dang Tuan Anh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Xuan commune affirmed: "If you want to reduce poverty sustainably, you cannot do it by "beating the drum and signing up". We determined that support is only the first step, the rest is to create motivation for people to stand on their own. Therefore, Huong Xuan is implementing poverty reduction in many directions at the same time. We aim to not leave any household behind, especially in border areas. When people are well-off, they will feel secure in staying with the border."
The journey of sustainable poverty reduction in the border commune of Huong Xuan can be clearly seen through the very real changes that are appearing every day. Rice grains have sprouted, cows have grown, Chut men know how to use hoes to weed, women know how to calculate the harvest season, children go to school... Huong Xuan is on a journey to rise up and each family here is becoming a "living milestone" to protect the border area in the simplest way, eliminating hunger, reducing poverty, building a strong and rich future.
