In less than two years, Intel has laid off more than 35,500 employees in a drastic restructuring campaign by new CEO Lip-Bu Tan. According to Tom's Hardware, more than 20,000 people will be laid off in 2025 alone in an effort to cut costs.
Lip-Bu Tan, dubbed Silicon Valley's "steel investor," has vowed to end Intel's "unlimited spending" era. His goal is to return the group to a philosophy of financial discipline and focus on AI chip manufacturing, advanced packaging and 3-nanometer technology.
However, large-scale staff cuts have caused many research projects to be halted, internal morale to decline, and a series of veteran engineers to leave. Intel expects to have only about 75,000 employees by the end of 2025, down more than 20% from last year. Tan believes this is a “necessary price” for Intel to revive and compete with rivals like NVIDIA or TSMC.
Analysts say Lip-Bu Tan's gamble could determine the future of the technology icon that once dominated the global semiconductor industry. Dear readers, please watch more videos : Iris scanning tool to verify human | VTV24
