Why did England 'evaporate' in 11 days in September 1752?

A strange event in 1752 caused British people to go to bed on the night of September 2 and wake up on September 14. What forced the entire country to “erase” 11 days from the calendar?

No British people were born between September 3 and 13, 1752. Similarly, no one married or died during that period. During these 11 days, no trade agreements were signed and no activity took place. Photo: timeanddate.com.

In fact, all British people went to bed on the night of September 2 and woke up on the morning of September 14. The fact that Britain “evaporated” for 11 days in September has many people curious about the reason. Photo: “An Election Entertainment”, painting by William Hogarth, ca. 1755.

The solution to this mystery comes from the change of calendar in England. Before September 2, 1752, England was still using the Julian calendar while most countries in the world had switched to the Gregorian calendar. Photo: unchartedlancaster.

Specifically, according to the Julian calendar, a year has 365.25 days. However, the length of the solar year is 365.242216 days. Therefore, the Julian calendar is about 0.0078 days longer than the solar year, which is about 11 minutes and 14 seconds. Photo: Kizel Cotiw-an/Shutterstock.

To balance the difference between the calendar year and the solar cycle, every 400 years, 3 days must be omitted for a leap year. By 1582, the difference between the two ways of calculating the number of days in a year as above had reached 10 days. Photo: thecollector.

In 1582, the Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII and adopted by many countries. The first countries to adopt the Gregorian calendar decided to skip 10 days in October 1582 to align their calendars. Photo: medium.com.

It was not until 1752 that England decided to use the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, England had to remove 11 days from the calendar (ie from September 3 - 13, 1752) to match the time of other countries in the world. Photo: Ancient-origins.
