The Information newspaper on September 19 quoted informed sources as saying that Apple has asked at least two suppliers to increase production by at least 30% for the standard version of the iPhone 17 model, after recording a sharp increase in orders last weekend.
This development shows that the number of consumers choosing the "affordable" $799 iPhone 17 version has exceeded Apple's predictions, instead of choosing the higher-end Pro models.
The Pro version starts at $1,099 and has superior materials, cameras, processors, and displays.
The article said that this week, Apple asked Luxshare Precision, one of its two main iPhone assemblers in China, besides Foxconn, to increase daily production of the standard iPhone 17 model by about 40%. Apple has not commented on this information.
Apple is hoping its latest iPhone lineup, including a thinner version called the iPhone Air, will revive growth for its flagship product after years of sluggish sales. Consumers are holding back on upgrading their phones, in part because new models offer only incremental improvements.
The standard iPhone 17 version officially hit shelves on September 19, equipped with screen and camera upgrades previously reserved for Pro models, thereby narrowing the gap with Apple's high-end versions.
Apple has long been good at encouraging customers to buy expensive, high-margin devices. The latest development suggests a shift as consumers become more price-sensitive. Analysts say selling more low-cost phones could help Apple defend its market share but put pressure on profits.
